Thinkin bout buyin a 7mm mag.

Having never shot the Remington or Savage I couldn't offer an opinion on either except for looks. I very much do not like the black plastic look. I do shoot the 7mm rem mag, but mine is a Ruger M77 (old model, polished wood shiny blued barrel, with the thumb slide safety). You will not be dissapointed, IMO, with the 7mm rem mag.
The thing about buying rifles is not to limit yourself to just one or two makes, handle a few different makers, as some will fit better than others. This is a fact even between different calibers from the same maker.

The 7 mag is a fine calibur and has proved it for many years. I bought mine 22yrs ago and it has been a dandy. Its a rem 700 bdl with the shiny stock which i dont care for all that much, but it has gun chaps on it to keep the glare down. I own 3 rem rifles and all have been good. These are older rifle and I can not complain about the quality of them. The only newer rem that I have shot is the 770 which I didnt care for at all. I have shot several savages but do not own one.

Are you sure you want to step up from a .243 to a 7mm magnum? That is a huge jump man, and compared to the .243, the 7mm is going to be a recoil beast! There has got to be some intermediate cartridge that I think would serve you better and be cheaper to shoot. If the .243 has been working for you why not step up to its daddy cartridge the .308, or a .270, .280, 30-06?
I know Savage rifles are known for the quality at a value priced but I have never owned one. I prefer Remington and Browning rifles.

I took my new 7mm-08 and my son's .243 to the range this weekend to make sure the scopes were zeroed in for deer season. Both have Remington's factory recoil pads. To me, there's a VERY noticeable difference between the 7mm-08 and the .243. And the RM has significantly more than the 08...

ipscshooter,
I agree 100%.
I have both the 243 win and 7mm Rem mag. Both have a limbsaver recoil pad on them. The 243 has a pad in order to lessen the recoil for my daughter. The 7mm has a pad for me.
The weight of the 243 gun in the synthetic Savage is quite a bit less than the 7mm with the wood stock
All that being said the 7mm has MUCH more recoil than the 243.

7mm rem mag is very close in terms of recoil to the fabled 30-06, IMO. Will it kick more? Yes. Will you cry and go to ER for a dislocated shoulder? Nawwww, lol. Make sure you have a good amount of eye relief on the scope you use. Those cheap scopes with short eye relief will be the biggest cause of pain on the gun, not the recoil.
