Since hogs are a possibility go with something larger than a .30-30...

The perenial favorite in eastern Kentucky (heavy wood with steep grades) is a semi-automatic in .30-06. I killed my first deer with a Remington 742 in .30-06. The new Remington 750 is also offeredas an 18 inch barrel carbine (in both .308 Winchester and .30-06). Top it with a good quality variable scope with shoot through rings (keep the scope of 3x most of the time).

For hunting the thick stuff where shots will likely be less than 100 yards, a 30-30 is fine! A lever gun, pump or auto loader would be my choice because of the quick handling and follow-up shots! I'd prefer the extra thump and range of a .308 or '06 over a 30-30 though!

I am with Bronko on the 35 Rem over the 30-30 when hogs are an option. And the 45-70 would be a great choice. Also take a look at the remington pump rifles in 06 or 308. They are probably the quickest followup shot and suprisingly accurate.

New hunter here in South Florida. This is what I am thinking.

I will be hunting deer and hogs in the swamp and in heavy brush.
I'm pretty sure that distance will be 50-75 yards max
.30-30 lever maybe? .30-06 bolt-action? Savage? Remington?
Scope or no scope?
Price range is $600-ish

Can ya'll help a Florida Boy out?

Dave
Yes. I'd get a Marlin lever Guide gun in .45/70 and put a 1.5X-5X Leupold variable on it. Use a bullet of at least 330 grainsat a MV of +-1600 fps init. Several of the smaller ammo makers furnish some pretty hefty 45/70 loads.....

I'm pretty well convinced the old Ruger .44 magnum semi-auto carbines are THE ULTIMATE close range brush carbine. Weighing just over 6 pounds, 18.5" barrel, 5 shots of .44 magnum as fast as you can pull the trigger, gas operated, EXTREMELY fast handling. The accuracy is nothing to brag about, but how much accuracy do you need for less than 100 yards? Mine will group 5 shots into 2.5" at 100 yards.
