257 Roberts?

RE: 257 Roberts?
I'd probably suggest a .243 Win, .260, or 7mm-08 instead.
Who's chambering a .257 roberts nowadays? good round, just wouldn't be my first pick, nor probably even on my lists....but not a bad round, just would pick one of the other 3....

you might want to consider a .243 or 25-06. Both of them are similar to the Roberts in terms of recoil and power, however the ammo will be much easier to find. I know i only see .257 rounds in the bigger stores and even then there are not very many choices. I know there is a dedicated following that loves the Roberts but I think its dying a slow death in terms of popularity. If you are buying your a girl a rifle she may use for the rest of her life a .243 or 25-06 might be a bit more practical. As far as the round in an of itself it is a great deer round and does not have much in the way of recoil, so other then its waning popularity it would be a very good choice. Either way great job in getting your daughter involved, good luck!

The roberts round is one fine caliber. I have had one for many years, my wife has used it and so has my son. It is a fine round for a young hunter. They are difficult to come by now,I dont know of a manufacture that makes one at this time. This rifle has taken over 20 deer with no complaints either. IMO they a better round than the 243, the 25-06 does offer more power, but with more recoil. I wouldnt reccomend it for a young hunter who is recoil shy.

It's likely my next. Not as popular as it once was but if you handload it's got it all over the .243.Like the 7x57 it's case comes from it's very efficient. With the 25-06 or .257 Weby you'll get a flatter trajectory but you also burn a lot more powder which means more recoil for a fairly small gain at extreme range.

The 257 Roberts is an excellent cartridge. I believe it needs to be a handloaded round to get the most out of it, as it is none too popular any more, so the factories don't do it justice. Another good one is the 6.5X57, almost the same, but with heavier bullets. The .260 Remington and the 6.5X55 would also be good choices. The 6.5mm 140-grain bullets have excellent ballistic properties.

Ruger offers the M77 in .257 Roberts. Although a great round but not very comercial. I would consider the .243 Win. The ammo is cheap and almost every gun manufacturer offers the caliber. .257 Rem ammo is about $6-7 more than the .243 ammo. Not much of an issue if you do not shoot alot.
