Rem 788 price check??
I'm looking at a Remington 788 7mm-08 with a Leupold 4x scope. The blueing looks about 85% and the laminate on the stock has cracked and peeled off around the buttpad. SoI'd say the stock is at65-70% Anyone know what the going price of these are?

For someone to give you an accurate price you need to give a little more detail, and a picture of the rifle.
The 788 was a very good rifle. It was also a very accurate rifle. I have never seen one in 7-08 however. But you see something new every day. From your description it sounds like the rifle has been used(but not necessarily abused). I would not doubt that the rifle could be worth up to $300 without the scope. Maybe more. Since the scope is a Leupold you can buy it with confidence. So the scope should be worth at least $150 or possibly more. Then there is the mounts. So $500 for the package is not out of line. Tom.

That looks like it may be a carbine (18 1/2 barrel).Like said above they are for the most part all shooters .4x Leupold sounds like an M8.If you can get the package for $500 or less grab it.

RE: Rem 788 price check??
I have 2 remington model 788,both in 7mm08 and they are carbines. The last 2 years remington made the 788 (1983-1984),they made them in carbine 18.5" barreled versions, those 2 years were also the only 2 years 7mm08 chambering was offered as well. Remington brought these rifles out as economy alternative to the model 700,but they wound up actually shooting more accurate than the higher priced 700. Until recently, you could find these rifles used in gun and pawn shops for 150-300$,now days, expect to pay 400-450 for example in good shape rifle alone.

RE: Rem 788 price check??
It's amazing how cheap these rifles would go for say 4 or 5 years ago. But when word really got out that they would out shoot there big brother the 700, that cost 3 time's as much price's went up. I own a 308 and in my humble opinion in the hand's of a marksman it will out shoot the 700 any day of the week. But the action is sloppy and it has no smooth lines but it cycles fast and the down range performance of the 308 speaks for it's self. there's nothing on this earth walking or grazing that can survive it.

The 788 Rem outshot most of Remington's more expensive 700's and the only 24" barrels were on the varmint calibers. It was also made in .44 mag and 30-30 if your lucky enough to find one.......................Harold
