Marlin 336
Hey all,
What is a decent price for a used Marlin 336 .30-.30? I know it depends on the condition/age of the rifle but could you guys ballpark it for me? I currently only shoot muzzleloaders but am interested in a lever action rifle to use in the non-shotgun/pistol/muzzleloader area of the great but over-taxed State of Wisconsin. Can this gun effectively take deer in the 150-200 yard range? Not that I would get that type of shot where I currently hunt but it would be nice to know. Heard yes, but what do you think? Thanks.

I think you can pick one up for about 300 bucks new (From the sales I've seen at Walmart and Cabelas). As far as the range is concerned, look at the Hornady level-revolution ammo for the long range shooting. It cost's a little more than remington core-lock but it has over 1000 ft-lbs of energy at 300 yards. Check it out:

I bought this old Marlin 30AS (cheaper version of the 336) off a co-workerwho I used to work with, about5 years ago. This was a "closet classic" i.e. it sat in his closet for years and years, as he no longer hunted. Then, his wife suggested that he sell it. It originally had an old Glenfield 4x32 scope on it - which I immediately took off and sold on eBay (you know me... scopes just don't look right on lever guns ). Anyway, that old co-worker told me the 30AS ("S" means Sears) was given to him by his dad a long time ago, and he has long forgot when. But the 30ASis still in mint condition, so the sale price was $200 bucks, which I quickly paid for before he changed his mind.
The timeless classic old .30-30 is still going strong after 100+ years, and has dropped more deer than any other cartridge combined.
I love this ol' thing. Even though I have a Savage in a .308 with nice Bushnell 3-9x40 scope, I just can't part with my Marlin .30-30! With the plain iron sights, it's delegated as a close in "brush gun", in the thick heavy woods and briars.

They just had a special with the scope for 329.00, so they may have gone up. Again it was the 336W which IMHO is ugly as hell because of the cheap wood. The scope is garbage, but the combo is still cheaper or close to the same price as the gun alone at WalMart.

RE: Marlin 336
I got one at D I C KS sporting goods last christmas for $300 with the scope. I got the scope put on shot it a couple times and held up great. I ended up taking it off due to the fact that scopes don't belong on lever guns. Anyways, it is my go-to deer rifle. I don't think there is a better gun out there.
