I have to agree with norby keep your shots below 150 yards and put the bullet where it needs to be and it is more than enough gun for whitetails. I dont use my 30-30 much anymore, but i have killed several deer with it and have never had any problems as long as I done my part of the job.

Hunters are cripplers....not guns.

Guns don't cripple game, Only Shooters can do that.

Around here the biggest crippler guns are probably remington 742s in 30-06. Then again, if you give someone with no shooting skill, who fires less than a box of shells per year, and who probably doesn't even check his zero every year a .243, 30-30, a 30-06, or a 30-378, he's bound to shoot a deer poorly and lose it, a good heart-lung shot on a deer is only a matter of luck for this kind of hunter.

Very good point briman-we have same problem-also with "nimrods" that buy a factory boresighted remington model 710 to shoot maybe 1-3 times a year, then can't figure out why their "perfectly" shot deer can't be found. But yet, they swear their rifle is as good or better than everybody elses and they KNOW they're shooting abilities are every bit as good as somebody that shoots year round.

Something told me when I posted it this would be a "popular" thread any which way you cut it. I appreciate all the responses. Could not agree more on the "learn to shoot damnit!!" responses. I consider myself a shooter first and a hunter secondarily (see screen name lol), so this is near and dear to me. My take on it, before and after this thread, is that the 30-30 is perfectly capable, but when you have a bigger hammer available, why not use it? Seems several in this thread agree. I should note that the same hunting buddy who lost the 2 deer 30-30 hit earlier this season made a spectacular raking shot this past Monday evening to take a 130lb'er. He borrowed my brothers 700 SPS 308 4-12x40 Leupold VX-II w/ 168gr Bal Silvertips (consistant 1/2 MOA gun by the way). Amazingly enough we had an exit wound, came in behind the short rib in front of the ham, traversed the lenght of the deer, and exited the off-side shouder...DRT. So it goes!! Again thanks for all the replys.

A 30-30 a deer crippler? What moron paid magazine writer said that? A person shooting a big 7mm can easily cripple an animal due to them being a poor shot.

How many of you see people posting awesome target pics when shooting off a bench? Out in the field they come back kicking the gravel at their feet and make up some kind of poor excuse.

.25 It seems like it checkers or wreckers for me as well. No matter how much I shoot almost without fail I will blow at least one terribly easy shot a year and make a couple that I had no business making..lol. I guess buck fever gets us all occasionally.
