RE: Going to buy a new 22 rifle....
I own a 597 and I'm not getting rid of it. I wish I would have dont like you and asked around to people who own different .22s. But, when you dont have a job and your young, I just went out and bought what I could afford and apealed to me at the time. DOnt do that. Take some time do some research. I like my 597, but I have never shot a 10/22. But if you are wanting to make your own adjustments, etc. go with the 10/22. all the magazines i have carry plenty of factory parts and the such. I think you might enjoy it a little more. I was looking at marlin .22s though. They looked alright to me, but I have never shot one. My favorite is still my grandmothers pump action winchester .22 that was made in 1905 or so. and still shoots great. Just find what feels good to you and try it. Hope that helps some.

I bought a Marlin 22 mag. with clip and wood
stock 2 years ago and after putting a pressure point under the end of the stock/barrel this gun really shoots! At 50
yards I shot two 3 shot groups under 1/2 inch
and just for fun I shot a 100 yard group to
see what it would do. My 3 shot group measured exactly 3/4 inch. For a cheap
gun it shoots better than I ever expected.

The only downside to my Ruger 10/22 is the feel of the thick "waist" of the stock where it meets the rear of the receiver. It's a little thicker than ideal for me, but performance has not suffered, as I stated earlier.

I love my Ruger 10/22. Bought it in high school for squirrel, rabbit, and coon hunting (I loved the copper bead on the front sight for shooting at night). Has been very dependable and accurate. I highly recommend it.

I took my 597 to a dealer to trade towards a different 22 ( see my previous post). He was interested in doing a trade until I took the 597 out of it's case. He saw it and stated he wasn't looking to bring any more of "those things" into his shop. Now i've dealt with this guy for years and respect his opinions. He has done custom work for me and sells reputable products. I WILL find a place to sell or trade this baby,I guess it won't be there!
