RE: scope
I just did quite a bit of shopping for a scope myself. All the scopes people brought up above are very good, but for my amateur eyes the Nikon Prostaff is definately in the same league and costs about half of the others.

RE: scope
I put a Bushnell Elite 3200 on my 22-250 (5-15x50)a few years ago and liked it enough to put another one on my 300wsm (5-15x40)last season. Great scopes and right in your price range, also waterproof. My father has a Nikon Monarch UCC in 3-9x40thats supposidly known for its light gathering abilities, and the Elite 3200 seems to transmit just as much light.
I recently wanted acompact scope with bullet drop compensation for my AR-10 so I went with a Burris Timberline in 3-9x32. So far it looks great although I haven't actually mounted it :-).
Also, I've been doing some long range shooting recently at small targets. If you plan on doing any of this make sure you get something with at least 4-12 magnification and a fairly fine crosshairs. However if this is strictly for hunting you can't go wrong with a 3-9.
Alot of personal preference in scope purchases.
