The 25-06 has the best selection of rounds available of the two . so if I didn' t reload it would be my choice . I recently came across someWinchester model 70 barreled actions in 257 Roberts ,and plan on buying one to put a thumbhole stock on but it will be all handloads for it .

I' ve owned two .257 weatherby' s and several .25-06 and three .257 Roberts.
A featherweight Model 70 in .257 Roberts is my favorite of all the .25 caliber cartridges. The Roberts cartridge is still as good and better than ever. Check out Hornady' s light magnum series of ammo. The Roberts is also available in +P style from Remington as well. Handloading the Roberts is preferable but not at all necessary.

it seems i miht just go with the 257roberts as most of my hunting in under 200yds unless i decide to go out and hunt on a power line or in a potato field.
plus the 24" barrel i don' t like due to walking through swamps with an extra 2" ( which might not be alot but enough to get caught ).
how far is the 257roberts capable of cleanly taken deer out too?

DG, and some others. It was not a question about bailistics, range performance or best for larger game. The original question was about selection of factory ammunition. And which cartridge would be better for the non-reloader?

Since I don' t handload, I go for calibers that are inexpensive for factory ammo. I have a 30-06 and it is pretty cheap to shoot and very accurate with factory ammo. There are lots of choices for it. I also have a .308 and ammor for it is almost as cheap but fewer bullet weights will shoot well in mine. If I were chosing between .257 Roberts and 25-06, I would pick the 06 in a second. Ammo is cheaper and with more offerings. And 25-06 is a great round. For deer sized animals it is one of the best.

I' d go with the .25-06 since you don' t reload. If you rolled your own, that' s different, but the .257rob in factory loads is MUCH weaker than it should be, and you aren' t going to find ANY selection (lucky to find one load per shop) for it. If factory loads were sold that lived up to its potential, I think it would be a much more popular round, probably take away a lot of the .25-06' s limelight.

my friend let me throw one more thought at you.....suppose there was a fly on your wall and you wanted it killed.....you had a choice of swatting it with a swatter or calling in the USS Wisconsin and having a battery of six 16" guns pound it into oblivion......ge tmy point?
The .257 Roberts is fully the equal to a .25-06 or a .257 Weatherby.....
