new defense handgun
I am thinking of getting a new defense handgun.
99% of the time it will stay in my house unless i am target shooting.
I want it for home defense but if i go to KY i would carry it.
I do not plan to carry it CC here because in Indiana you must have a permit and i do not feel i really need to go throw all that.
I was thinking of a beretta or a glock. maybe a S&W. i am open to a good brand.
I would like to stay around 500 or less.
Also i have always said i will always carry 9mm.
But i figure if i am going to drop 500 bucks on a handgun i should be open to a 45.
I would prefer to stay with something like a 9mm or 45. so the ammo is not hard to get or costly.
So would you recommend a 45 or 9mm
Alsoi want a semi auto the high the factory mag cap. the better.
I am a big guy and a big gundoes not bother me. i hada double stack ruger p89 everyone said they were two big i loved the gun.

Buy the gun that fits YOUR hand. For the most part any of the major brands will be quality so find the model that fits YOU. If it doesn't fit your hand, it's not going to be comfortable to shoot nor accuarte for you.
Were it me and had a $500 max, I'd go with a Ruegr Sp101 but then I'm a revolver person.

I just posted in your poll a minute ago. I would much rather have a 40 then a 45 or 9mm to carry around but others will have other things to say. Now since its going to stay home most of the time i would go with a shotgun with some good turkey loads. They do alot more damage at close range and you dont have to worry as much about it going through the wall which is a major issue with kids or anyone elsein the house. OK now back to your original question. I have2 Springfield XD pistols. One is a Sub-Compact in 40 and the other is a Compact in 45. I carry the 40 alot and they are both great guns. The 40 was $480 and the 45 was $500. For the 40 i have a 9 round mag thats always in the gun, 2 12 round mags in the truck just incase and a 10 round mag in the work truck just incase. The 45 has 1 10 round mag and 1 13 round mag.

i am not against a rev. just like semis more. I plan to look at the 357 to.
I know fit helps alot a few years back i bought a hi point.
Just something cheap. Got a compact 9mm for 135 bucks. NIB.
I went to the range and my hand did not have alot of room. it hurt my wraist shooting two handed. I went back to the shop and the guy let me trade it in on a shotgun. even gave me all my money back on it

Ohh. Ok. If i was you i would look into the Springfield XD model pistols. They are great guns for the price. You might go a little over your $500 mark but it will be well worth it. Or you could get a used one. The local gun shop has a XD-40 for $350 right now. It dosnt look like it has any more then 200 rounds through it even though the guy there said it has about 500.

I'll take a .45 over a 9 mil every time, and I've got just the piece for you: FN (Fabrique Nationale; they make nearly all of our military's machine guns, plus more). FN .45 auto, 14 shot. I have less than 200 rounds through the gun. Factory hard case, 3 mags, owner's manual. $550. E-mail me at [email protected] if you're interested.

Go with the 45. in any instance where you need to have a one shot kill the 45 is the way to go. one solid shot anywhere in the torso or stomach area will give the bad guy probably a huge change of heart. A 9mm will need repeated hits to anchor someone. You might not have enough time to get away or not get hurt with the 9mm. Id personally go with a revolver. You got 6 shots for sure. Ive got a Springfield XD thumb safety and i thought that it was the best thing out there. Until it jammed with Golden Sabers. Up to this point it had shot everything 110% reliably. it held 13+1 capacity. I have now purchased a Thunder Ranch 22-4 45ACP. i know i have got 6 for sure shots, while the XD i might have 3 before it jams or i might have all 14.
But im not completely bashing the XD. it is a relatively inexpensive gun, i think around $600 or less. Once you find a load that will not jam in it, shoot it. If considering the XD get the one with the thumb safety. There was definitely some thought put into this gun. I love its simple and quick takedown system.
