remington 700 mountain rifle
the 700 bdl is very notorious for decent out of the box accuracy, but how is the mountain rifle? I know that the barrel is much thinner etc, so it heats up. Ive heard that it strings the shot verticly. Is this true? Is this rifle worth buying or would it be better to go with a bdl or adl?

I've heard from a couple of owners that the Mountain Rifle kicks more than an ADL or a BDL. Must be the lighter weight of the rifle.
None of these people commented on the rifle's accuracy or lack thereof.

Bob, I actually came here to post a very similar question. I've been very interested in purchasing a mountain rifle in 7mm-08 but I've never shot one. For some reason, every time I handle them at the gunshop I come away with the feeling that I would not shoot it as accurately as my BDL 30-06. I don't know if its the lighter weight or slender lines compared to the BDL, but hopefully we can get some guys who have shot both and can offer a comparison.

Bob,
I traded away a 700 Mountain rifle that was a shooter. It was a 25-06 with the detatchable magazine. It would shoot 1/2" 3 shot groups with 115 gr Balistic Tips. The best group I ever shot with it was the 87gr Speer TNT"s. It measured .323" 5 shot @100yds. I never noticed it vert. stringing and I warmed her up a few times. I like the stock shape better than the BDL, it just fit me better.
I would definitely buy another.

I have a mountain rifle in 280 Rem. and find it very accurate, it will shoot 1/2" groups @ 100 yds when I do my part, and I don't even hand load for it. One thing to remember is that the barrel can heat up, but if you take the time to let it cool down during sight in it should be fine. Obviously there is no guarantee that any particular gun will be accurate, but I haven't found it to be less accurate than any of the other model 700's I own, and it is more accurate than most of them.

I bought a 700 MNT in 7mm-08 for my daughter to use deer hunting a few years ago. No problem with it stringing shots. But We ususlly fire 3-5 shots and then check targets. So the barrel never gets too hot. My dad has an old 700 MNT in .30-06. His will string shots vertically. But I think this is from a warped stock. When he checks it for fit and everything's ok then it doesn't string.

The barrel will be fine for as many shots as you will take while hunting. How many times do you ever take more than three or four shots at an animal. My model seven in seven mm-08 shot 3/4" groups with handloads and it had a very thin barrel.
