RE: 10/22 choice
I would say any 10/22 is going to be good. They probably have the biggest after market of any .22 rifle. Depends on what you really want to do with it. If you just want it for plinking at the range, a standard carbine is pretty good right out of the box. Add a bull barrel, target hammer, stock of your choice and a high power scope you can have a tack driver pretty easy too.
I have two, a bull barreled hogue stock wearing tweeked trigger with a 4x12x40 scope that I use for squirel and about every other critter and also a fluted bull barrel, thumb holed laminated stocked tweeked trigger with a 4x16x50 scope wearing bench gun. I like them both.
Next one will probably be a tacticool one looking like an M4. Who knows. Have fun with what ever you choose and try not to spend all your money on a $189 rifle.
Good luck!

What do you consider as cheap? For $345 list price you could get a 10/22 sporter with walnut stock and checkering if that is your style of gun. I bought one when they first came out, and I have over 50,000 rounds through it. Keeps on ticking.

If you want to upgrade sooner or later I would suggest going to Disk's Sporting Goods or wal-Mart and getting one of the basic synthetich stocked one for about $189 give or take. If you want to get it and leave it be get a nicer deluxe model for about $60 more. I got a deluxe model and love it, I can shot 10 rounds into 1'' at 50 yards from shooting sti
cks. I floated the barrel last week and I am eager to see if that shrunk any.
Basic
Deluxe. I love mine.

One word of advise, try to find a pre-2008 10/22 with the aluminum trigger if you can. They recently switched to a plastic molding, and the consensous is that they have a nastier pull stock, and that thier inherint flex makes modifying them much tougher due to ever changing tolerences due to flex.
