For deer- the 41 over the 357.

I believe the minimum for deer should be the 41 magnum, or 44 magnum.

I don't believe the 357 magnum is adequate.

Wyoming's in the process of refining its minimum cartridge standards, but in the past, the .41 Mag was effectively the MINIMUM legal handgun caliber. The .357 was suitable only as the .357 Maximum, so the traditional .357 Magnum was NOT legal.

I suspect that's the case in many states?

Do you reload??

The 41 Magnum is a great cartridge. So is the 357. If you are going to keep your shots under 30 yards then the 357 is more than adequate. The 41 is a better choice, but if you do not reload then shooting the 41 is going to be considerably more expensive to shoot. You can get a lot of practice in with your 357 for a lot less money.

So I would say if you do not reload and want to practice alot then I would go with the 357.

I personally like the S&W over the Ruger, and I prefer the 44 magnum. But then that is just personal preference. Everything you have suggested will work adequately. Tom.

Tom.
No Tom I don't.--But I have been looking into it real hard.
untill I start I'm gonna shoot as much as I can afford--When I feel that I'm Good enough I will hunt with it, Not a minute sooner!!
That is why in my first post I said I'm gonna set my single six up the same way--pratice alot with it--I know the 41 is got way more kick-but i figure its better than no pratice!

The Single Six is a good idea. No doubt. But there is a lot to be said about shooting the pistol you will be hunting with. The single six will be close.

I only recommended the 357 because you can buy a lot of 38 Specials for practice in a 357 Magnum. And you can buy a lot of 38 Specials cheap. Or at least considerably cheaper than 41 mag ammo.

As far as recoil is concerned. The 41 will recoil more than the 357(as I am sure you know). If you are only considering the 41 over the 44 because of recoil you will be disappointed. There is not much felt recoil difference between the 41 and the 44 in the same revolver. There is a little difference, but it is very little. Especially in the heavier hunting loads.

I realize you said you wanted a 41 and not 44. But if the reason is due to recoil then I would reconsider. Check your pricing, but I believe you can find 44 ammo cheaper than 41 ammo. Tom.

I like the 357 but ............ a 45 Colts Black Hawkfound a home with me so that is the 1 I'll hunt should I luck into tags this year .
Nevada specifies center fire 24 cal or larger with a minimum case length of that of the Rem 44 mag . That includes 25? win.mag ,327 fed,357mag/max,45Colts,454 Cas.,41,44,460,500 mags, but throws out all of the Automags and the 50AE and a rifle must carry 1000 ftlbs at 100 yrds so excepting the S&W's no pistol cart.in rifles. On a technicality a 45-70 Guide gun of 18" with rem 350hp's is illegal for big game but a 223 with 55 grain serrias is enough for elk .
