ox,
Seems you ask this kind of question a lot. But ....
A .30-06 will NOT blow an antelope "to nothing" at the ranges you're speaking of. If you're looking for ONE rifle to hunt species from antelope to moose, it'd be awfully hard to beat the .30-06. It may be more than what's needed to kill an antelope, and while it doesn't have the sex appeal of the magnums, will certainly do in a moose.
I'd consider the .270 Win the minimum moose cartridge, anything above .30-06 on antelope is just making noise and considerably more than what it takes to handle one.

I guess Iam missing something, a 308 is what snipers use a lot, easy to dope and lightloads for deer/goat game and 165/180's for elk and bear.....BUT I can understand wanting a new gun as we all have some rounds that duplicate one another......cant have too many guns

Unless you handload, and then the options are endless, I would stick with .270, 280, 30-06 or 7mm Rem Mag. Bullet weights in factory ammo and ammo availability with moderate recoil and plenty of energy on reasonable shots make these four hard to beat for North American game- excluding big bears.

I agree with the earlier comment - the.30-06 is too close to the .308 ballistically. I'd recommend a .300 WSM. The 150gr for pronghorn, a 180gr for elk/ moose, or the 165 gr for everything

The Sweds swear by the 6.5x55 for moose not really the new V-rod you were looking for I'm sure . Me I'm an 30-06' guy and I have a 308 too . With those 2 as a handloader you have options from 45 -250 grain bullets commercially if you shop around a little 100-200 aren't too hard to find .
If ya just have to have a new gun ( and whom doesn't want 1 ) I would be shopping a 338 win or a 35 Whelen . The Whelen for the above 06' excuse . Also both are nicely suited to the big bears known to freqent Moose and big elk country .
