Dont overlook the .35 Rem.
After much research.. I have decided to go with the 35 Rem.. It has balistics that are comparable to my 444 Marlin and the availability of the ammo (I don't reload) was the big kicker.. So I will be ordering an Encore barrell in 35 Rem next month..

Thanks for the input..

.300 WSM, .325 WSM, .338 Win Mag, .375 H&H, .375 Ruger... if not including brown bear.

.338 Win Mag, .338/378 Weatherby, .375 H&H, .375 Ruger... if including brown bear.
I know you simply made a mistake when you included the 338 Win Mag in both the "with" bear and "without" bearlist, but which one did you mean for it to be included in?
Just curious as I have no experience with brown bear and have never owned a .338 Win Mag.

Pretty sure he meant for the .338win mag to be in both categories...as are a few other rifles in both groups....

I would suggets the .338 mag but since you mentioned you were not a mag fan then how about (and it is something that I have back ordered), a .357 Marlin lever action gun?

Got to be a Single Shot Break open with an exposed hammer in 35 caliber or larger to be legal for Primitve Weapon...

I think I'll have to chime in here for the 338 Federal. I have a Tikka T3 Synthetic, blued. It doesn't kick any more than a 30-06 and as mentioned earlier has very close to ballistics of 338 Win Mag. I also like the 338 RCM, but would wait a little while to see if it catches on especially if you don't reload.

Since you like short actions, I think you need to fill out your .243/7mm-08/.308 family and get a .338 Federal.
