Is the .308 Dead?

RE: Is the .308 Dead?
If that was the case between the military/civilian ammo, my Grandpa's ol Model 100 Winchester would not be shooting today. Just so everyone knows, it still shoots like the day it came off the assembly line, only with alot of character added to it.
I've never heard of not being able to interchange between NATO and Civilian.

sory guys for the wait on the 7.62 thing but they put alot more powder in the 7.62 then the 308, the 308 chambers arent meant to handle the charge that the 7.62 has even though the bullets share the same outer dimmentions. its kinda like using a 5.56 bullet out of a .223, the 5.56 has alot more powder and can deform the chamber or the empty can get stuck in the chamber

that is just not true
the SAAMI spec for a .308 Win is higher than the military sets for the 7.62

SAAMI specs on the .308 call for loads with chamber pressures up to the 62,000+ psi range. The 7.62 NATO rounds are only loaded to about 50,000 psi because of use in some older rifles. I think you might want to do a little more research...

RE: Is the .308 Dead?
I think I may have heard it all now! LOL
The military cases are thicker in the case of the 5.56, thus bumping the pressures. Still, shooting 5.56 out of a 223 chamber won't hurt anything, I've done it for years and years on multiple rifles.
If I was to guess, I'd guess the 7.62 cases are a little thicker as well, and I haven't been scared to shoot them out of a 308 chambered rifle.

RE: Is the .308 Dead?
I may get flamed for this but it was always my understanding that both the 5.56 NATO and 7.62 NATO are 100% interchangeable with the civilian 223 and 308. The main difference isinterior case dimension, with Mil-Spec cases slightly thicker, pressure(MIL-SPEC slightly lower, powder used, and bullet used.
I do know that from the NATO ammo that I've seen and used generally have a heavier weight bullet than is normally seen in commercial hunting rounds. 68gr, I think, in 5.56 and 174gr in 7.62 I'm not saying that you can't buy these or similarweight FMJ bullets in civilian commercial rounds, I'm just saying that they are heavier than what civilians consider standard weight.
NATO Mil-Spec for small arm ammo should be available somewhere on the internet, if you know where to look, which I don't.
