Default Back-up Rifle

I have a 7mm mag and I really like it, but I was wanting to get another rifle. I would like this one to first not cost very much. Second I want it to be a smaller round with less recoil than my 7mm mag, and third I want to be able to be more rough with it than I am with my 7mm mag, since it has a wood stock. I would like to either get a synthetic stock, or an older gun that it just doesn' t matter. I have thought about a 243 and a 30 30. I do not handload, so that is definitely a factor. 7mm 08 ammo is a little harder to find. Thanks in advance for your reply.

My vote would go to the .243 of what you suggested. Look at Savages, even in the package at Wally-world where you get a crappy scope they are cheaper than almost all other similar rifles, and they shoot incredibly well. A savage in .243 would be perfect for what you describe, just a workhorse with less recoil than a 7mm mag. For all it' s worth, the glass on the package gun wouldn' t make ya feel bad if ya broke it either!

The .308 Winchester is perfect for what you are looking for. Recoil is mild, and because of a variety of bullet sizes it is very versitile, you could comfortably hunt anything from coyotes to elk with it. Also, you can find .308 Win ammo almost everywhere.

I have a Tikka .308 Win, and its a great gun. I only paid $500 for it brand new.

I would have to agree with Rangerlab on the 308 caliber because that' s what I have. I have a 7mm Rem.Mag for long shots and 308 semi-auto for in the bush. Both rifles are very popular calibers so getting amo is not a problem

i agree that the 308 caliber is a good gun. i use to shoot one when i first started hunting 4 yrs ago. i am 16 now and i have a winchester 30-06. but i have been looking around for another rifle too. i am lookin for a cheap gun that shoots good. and i think i have found it. the H&R handi rifle. its only a single shot but it only costs about 200 to 250 from what i have heard. i am lookin at the 223 caliber because of the cheap ammo. i can shoot varmets and i found shells that only cost about 4 bucks a box. but for the winchester or reming load its alittle more expensive for ammo. but i cant afford to go around shooting my 30-06 as much as i would like too. so i am hoping to get a 223. well i hope i was a help.

Thanks for the replies so far. I was thinking of the .308 as well, and I agree that those two guns mentioned, the .308 and .243, are very close to what I want. I live in North GA, and I really only hunt whitetail. I love my 7mm mag for most of where I hunt because I need to make longer shots, 150 yds or more, but I do have a couple of places that are heavily wooded and I don' t have a shot longer than 75 yds. I still am having problems on which of the two I previously mentioned I should get. It is not a big deal because I have 9 months or so until hunting season, but I would like to get one by spring, so that I can get used to the gun. Again thanks for all of the replies so far. Also I was wondering what makers you would recommend. I have a Savage, and I really like it, but I was wondering about some other brands. I am a college student, so I need to get the most for my money.

the .308 is an excellent choice for available factory bullet loadings , and accuracy , the shells are also easy to find as well
you should be able to get a savage model 10 or 11 with a synthetic stock and scope for about a little over $300.00 dollars , and they are available at walmart , and k-mart , so they should be easy to find
savage rifles in the 11 and 10 series are also usually very accurate as well

Thanks again for the replies. I have a savage now, and I really like it. I think that you get a ton for your money, but are there any other brands that are in the same category of as the Savage. I believe I will get a .308
