Is that really the reason they shortened the .338 win mag? seriously? so how much extra velocity would a .338 win mag get if it was full lengthy of the .300 win mag?

I think that's the stupidest reason I've ever heard on why a cartridge was made shorter.

I think we need a new wildcat....haha, full length .338 win mag.....let's call it the .338-300 win mag! haha. .338 ackley improved? might need to use .300 win mag to form it though! haha.
1. it's not so stupid if you were the one to accidently have it happen.

2. it's already been done, and with not much increase in fps, considering it having to be a wildcat. Look at the 340, it would be less than that. And then there's that short neck....

If you neck down a 338 case to 30 caliber you have a 308 norma mag also know as a 30/338with a teeny tiny difference. Not a lot of younger shooters know about these and I am sure it had a lot to do with Winchesters decision to make the case a bit longerl.

I own a .340 Wby. Mag., and will never sell, or trade it: I push a 250 gr. Barnes X 3062 f/s. 5200 ft/lb.the rifle shootsunder a half inch groups at 100m. Go to http://www.chuckhawks.com/super_338_Mags.htmfor more info. on other .338 cartridges. Good luck.

thanx for all the great info guys. Im not a "flinchy" person when it comes to shooting, but I would imagine that these rounds might would cause me to aquire a flinch when shooting. Is it recommended by most to install a muzzle break on these rifles, or is that considered bad form if you are going to be hunting with them?

You might very well find that a brake on a 338 will induce more flinch than the recoil. My 338 had a brake installed on it when I bought it, I had my gunsmith remove it
