If I had a .284 I'd use it for near every kind of Whitetail hunting I could encounter............ a superb round, way ahead of it's time.
When my grandfather was alive he had several Winchester 100's and 88's in his gun shop on consignment in .284. He told me that they had a slight problem that could be repaired and I should consider buying one.
I could kick myself for passing them up.

I'll try to help you make it easier for you to choose-sell me the .284 and use the .308. Nobody NEEDS a magnum for deer at 100 yards, and will likely hurt your shooting due to the increased recoil.

what im really getting from all the responses on this post.. is that either the .308 or .284 is more then plenty for my hunt.. or any hunts in the NY area.. but im also sensing that everyone loves this .284 which i do as well, i just hate the cost of the Ammunition.. untill the time and day which i learn to reload.. its pricey.. if i feel like doing some target shooting with this load.. say.. 40-60 shots.. thats about 120$ worth of bullets. Craziness!! finding the brush and the lil cloth holder thing to clean the gun.. almost IMPOSSIBLE.. midwayusa doesnt even have them in stock.. go figure.. dont get me wrong .. i LOVE my .284 BLR it is such an awseme looking gun, cool wood stock, clean.. leupold scope on it.. i got a great deal when i found that used gun in the shop.. the previous owner was a target shooter.. not a hunter and used to reload his own. also sounds like alot of people like this caliber and would buy it in a snap if i was selling.. but if thats true.. then why dont they make more .284 again? rise'm up from the dead.. more manufacturers should make some ammunition for it..
anyways.. keep the responses comming.. i love all this info.. this site and especially the users that dont just read all the time.. the ones that post all their opinions and suggestions and what not is what makes this site awseme.
thanks guys!

I own a Savavge 10gxp3 in 300WSM. I dressed it with a set of leupold rings and a Zeiss Conquest scope. The thing is an absolute tackdriver. I've killed deer out as far as 300 yards with it. I handload though, I use hornaday 168gr. a-max's with winchester casings.I know it's a little overkill for deer but I dont like chasing deer afterI shoot, and the load will drop them in their tracks.I ususally put 3 bullets in 1 hole while shooting at 100yds at the range. I also got trigger work done to mine, I wasn't to impressed with the accu-trigger savage puts on them. But if you want a tackdriver thats not to pricey at all, I recommend buying one, i think they are right around $550.
