RE: 300 WSM over 180 grain???
I shot a decent 8 point with mine this year at 375 yards. The bullet was a Sierra 155 grain Palma. I shot the deer right behind the shoulder, and in the middle as far as height of shot. The deer ran about ten yards and went straight down. I would guess his weight at 165#. Tom.

RE: 300 WSM over 180 grain???
Ive seen the 300 WSM used in rifles just for long range hunting. I limit my shots to 400 yards because i have never been able to shoot farther then that and dont know how well i will shoot farther. I will not shoot that far with the 300 WSM i ahve right now because it only has a Nikon 3x-9x scope on it. When i get the money to get adifferent scope im going to start shooting long distances alot more.

I consider the .300 WSM to be just like a .300 win mag, and my win mag I'd shoot to 500yds or so on an elk. Not sure if you really have aneed to shoot way past 500yds for hunting purposes, but in a specific case, further shots could be made, if you're a good shot and have a nice rifle.
I talked with a guy who was shooting 800yds with his .30-378 wby to get ready for a long range elk shot. I'm not sure I'd want to take a 800yd shot with a .300wsm on an elk, but somethign smaller, if you could hit it, I'm sure you could bring it down, maybe a muley, or sheep ....how far do you want to shoot? haha.

Good info guys. What type of ranges will you comfortably shoot with 300 wsm? Lets say the game is an elk. I'm new the the whole rilfe thing.. from the midwest where shotguns rule.

300 yards. I'm a southeastern US guy where you can't see much farther than that unless you are shooting down the highway, and only then when the humidity is low and the mirage won't throw you off at 100 yards.
I'd just have to find someplace to practice out to 400 or so. I've just never really shot anything in a sporting class cartridge much past 300 yards.... and only then a few times on gun club ranges.
The gun is capable of much more.... I guess I'm sort of like an old man driving a Z06 Corvette and never taking her over 65 mph on the way to bingo and my shriners meetings.

RE: 300 WSM over 180 grain???
A 300wsm has the capability to take down any animal in North America. I have hunted deer, elk, moose, bear, caribou, and many other with mine. It had no problem at all dropping an elk at 250yds with a 180gr. bullet. I print great groups with 180gr. bullets in my 300wsm. Although I do print excellent groups with the 168gr. V-max, I dont think I want to hunt elk, moose, caribou, ect. with that light of a bullet.

RE: 300 WSM over 180 grain???
I have owned my T3 .300wsm for two years and and it has by far exceded my browning 300winmag as well as my hunting partners I use a 180g with 61 grain h414 and have great success with combo. Is there a better mix I could get away with? I have taken moose, elk, whitetail and bear.Inoticethe amount of heat this combo creates when I fire in succession, 5 rounds is all I wantto run through it before I feel damage might be done.Any thoughts?
