i was wondering if something happened to our country during a war.and if if happened on our own turf. what caliber do you think will be around that ammo will be plentiful? 308win 223rem? do you think it would be more of military calibers? or other kinds?

Methinks that 30-06 isn't going to go out of style, war or no war.<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms... who's bringing the chips?

You can find .270 ammo anywhere that sells ammo in Alabama. Don' t overlook .22 and 12 guage (seriously). 30-30 and 30-06 are also very popular. I know more people who keep over 100 rounds of 7.62 x 39 than .223.

i think the 223 will be the most plentiful the military uses it the most and alot of cizilians have rifles in it..everything from varmint rifles to assult rifles all in 223....the 7.62x.39 will never have it in America...about the only popular gun in it is a AK... but than again 7.62x39 is cheap as dirt and the people that do own them may have lots..we still have a few hunderd rounds laying around of it from when dad had an AK a while back...i dont htink its #1 though...maybe second but next to the 223 i think 308...alot of guns in all forms are chambered in 308...i have a FAL and 2 ar-15s in the house...i got 18 mags for my FAL alone..i duno what dad has for his 15' s..but he has more than enough ammo for the 15' s...308 ammo were down to about 500rds...if there was a war id be shooting 308 for my assult rifle and my 3006 for my sniper rifle...true classics never go out of style! man thats a scary thought..that really can happen..and thats when people try to rob eachother and when terrorists or other military groups try to take up over..in my neighborhood i dont know any gun owners except 4...and all i know they have is hunting rifles and shotguns...we are pretty prepared though...i know what to do because when im at school dads here and when im here dads working so i am the man of the house when im here..i have to know these things...i hope that doesnt happen though...

I think you kind of hit the nail on the head, whatever they sell at Walmart would be the best bet. 30-06, 270, 308, 30-30, 9mm, .45, 44 magnum, 12 guage, .22 aren' t likely to sell out, but it never hurts to keep a couple of boxes on hand.

Another route to go is buy a cheap rifle that shoots cheap surplus ammo and buy the ammo in bulk. You can get ammo for cheap mosin nagant or mauser 98 rifles for a few hundred rounds for under $50. I have a couple hundred rounds of 8x57 ball ammo for if I ever needed my kraut rifle, though realistically, I' m probably a thousand times more likely to burn through it shooting milk jugs or clay pigeons than ever use it in a social breakdown crisis.

I think that 7.62 NATO (7.62 x 51/.308 Winchester) would be plentiful and also very effective for anything one might need to do.
