Default Short Action Mags

Do you think the short action mags are here to stay or will they be discontinued in a few years? I think if any will stay around it will be the WSM over the SAUM just my opinion.

Based on no hard data whatsoever, I think that the WSMs are here to stay. They seem to be gaining traction, being added to the lineup of more manufacturers this year. The 270 and 300 WSM seem to have the best chance. The 7mm might have too much entreched competition from existing 7mm rounds to make it in the long run.

I'd be interested in seeing some sales figures from Browning, Winchester, and Remington on how many of what caliber's they've sold in 2002. While the early adopters may not turn into sustained interest, it'd still be worth seeing some hard numbers.

I'm with Robert (again) on this one. I, too, think they are here to stay.

I'd also like to see something bigger, but I think the 8mm makes great sense. Doesn't have to be compared to the .338 Win Mag or .338-06, and a 200gr/.323-cal premium bullet loaded in that short, fat case should be quite all a hunter needs for just about anything here in North America. You would be able to handload 220gr bullets, if you wish, and smaller bullets in the 170-190gr range should make quite a long-distance dialer out of the cartridge. And recoil should be more than manageable for most shoooters.

Geez, and don't you like the sound of ".323 Winnie," or ".327 SAUMie?" Remington might even give Winchester a run for their .338 Win Mag money if they loaded such a round.

IMHO, in the long run (20+ years) very few of the new magnums will survive for three simple reasons.

First, they are cutting their own throats. Maybe one or two of the shorties will hang on and maybe even a couple of the bigguns. How many guns can one man own and why would he keep buying new cartridge after new cartridge after new cartridge? These things do cost money, ya know.

Second, isn't it extremely likely some genius will figure out a way to make and sell a ray-gun or electronic weapon? This would make smokeless powder a thing of the past like black powder and all these magnums dust collectors.

Lastly, maybe the big boys in the firearms industry ought to do some soul searching. Isn't the .17 rimfire the hottest selling weapon and ammo since Moses was a pup? Maybe folks are sick of the over-hyped, little-to-gain "new magnums".

But, hey! To each his own. I grew out of the stage where I had to constantly shoot a big booming cannon. My shoulder thanks me every time I kill a crow with my 10/22 instead of my 10 ga.!

I think the short mags are here to stay, the short action guys have been waiting for these calibers a long time and are buying them. Its been years since I've seen new releases take off so hard and so many manufactures start production on new calibers so fast.I believe as stated elsewhere the 300WSM and 270WSM will be around a long time, the 7mmSAUM will also make it I believe.I don't expect owners of the long versions of these calibers to drop them for the shortys but the guys you have been waiting(me included)for them will buy and use them. They are still not staying on shelves too long up here and die sales attest to their popularity. The first company to make the 33 caliber short mag will probably take that share of the market also.I have doubts about the Super short mags cause they involve retooling to make a new action length and that will restrict new offerings in that area for some time.IMHO they are here to stay and the grumblings you hear from some about them being a flash in the pan were heard when the 270 and 243 were first offered, the rest is history.

I'm going to have to agree with Webicle on his second point. Sign me up for the ray gun! I'll take the ray gun to hunt, my flying car to get me there, and my jetpack to take me to the back country! The department of fish and game can use their replicators to churn out monster bucks, two or three for every hunter! The future's so bright I have to wear shades!

Just kidding! All in good fun.
