.270 Win, 7mm 08, 308 would all be good choices.I like my 270 for deer.Last year I used a 7mm Rem Mag a little more then needed but did a excellent job needless to say.

I have been pulled over to the 7mm-08 side and my 308 and 300WSM sit in the gun cabinet and cry cause I can't get my hands to let go of that little 7mm-08.It hits hard and accurate but is a joy to shoot at the bench for extended periods.Mine is in a nice 7 1/4# bolt action.

.308 winchester sounds like the perfect match to your specs. however i cant help but add that my pet round, .270win will also acomplish what you want and require less holdover at all ranges.

"check out the remington model 710 in the .270cal. its a capable of 400yard shots and its a great deer rifle." I beg to differ. The cartridge is great but the 710 is a piece of junk. Why buy a rifle that has already had several recalls in only a few years? Besides the trigger is sandpaper, the bolt binds and in most cases can be pulled clean out of the gun, and the barrel is pressed in. Most reputable gun stores now refuse to sell the things. You can get a Savage for less money and it is a far better rifle.

Take your pick from Winchester, Remington, Browning, Tikka, Savage, or whatever is in your price range and fits you best. All rounds that could be used successfully for deer can and will perform quite well for many other uses. For ease of ammo procurement you cannot do better than the .308
If you don't care if you have to look further than Walmart for your ammo then your choices available are substantial.
It really depends on your shooting distance, your recoil sensitivity, and your shooting ability what you might pick.
My personal pick would be from one of these.......257 Roberts, 25/06, 6.5 X 55, .260, 7mm/08, .270, 7 X 57, 280, .308, .300 Savage, ...............I'm sure I've left off a few of others folks favorites. Hard to beat the .308 for many reasons. I'll bet you will find your best USED deal on a .308.
