What Do You Hunt With SLug Guns?

RE: What Do You Hunt With SLug Guns?
All those expensive slugs are nice and leave big holes, but the best grouping ones I've ever shot are the 2-3/4" remington sluggers. The MAG load not the MAX load. There is a difference and walmart usually only carries the MAX. Usually have to order them from a dealer but they are just as cheap. 1100 remington slugger will touch slug holes at 50 yards and2-1/2 to 3" group at 150 yards. 2" high at 50 yards = dead on at 100 yards on paper!

Besides the obvious deer hunting, what other uses does it have. Like would it be legal and effective to hunt elk in the dark timber with?

I like Lightfield slugs for their performance and price. A few years ago we did a field test between Federal, Remington, winchester and Lightfield. The lightfields out-performed all others that were tested. The shotguns were already sighted in at 75 yards with Remington slugs. The Lightfields shot 6" high at the same distance with 2" groups. All others were 3/4" to 2" low with 3"-4" groups. All these tests were performed from a bench using a Caldwell Lead Sled.

I traded a rifle fora Remington 870 Express 12 Guage in 3 inch. I ordered a rifled barrel from Ruger Mike that should be here in a couple of days with a scope. I've never owned a rifled shotgun beforeand just got thisone for no particular reason. Now that I've got it I'm pretty excited about hunting with it. I was just hoping that you guys could enlighten me on the different ways I can use my new toy!
As Always Thanks

However, I personally would never choose such a weapon over a decent rifle for big game, if I lived where rifles are legal. For one thing, despite its great killing power, it's trajectory is not very flat past 100-150 yards or so. And very few will shoot 1 MOA or less.

A 12 gauge slug in my opinion is the most devestating big game hunting weapon at close range, inside of 100 yards I wouldn't hesitate to use it on any big game animal (assuming it was legal). Even a 20 gauge slug makes an awful big hole.

If I was you I would check the twist rateof the barrel you are getting if it's a fully rifled barrel. If the barrel has a 1 in 34 twist rate then I would try Remington Copper Solids in 2.75" or 3". Barrels with a 1 in 34 twist rate work well with slugs around the 1600 fps area. Barrels with a 1 in 28 twist rate work well with the faster slugs of around 1900 or 2000 fps.You might wantto try some other slugs besides my reccomendation, but I'm just telling you what kind of luck I've personally had with my 870. Good luck with your new purchase!

I must add that "there are slugs, and there are slugs! The big, full-bore diameter soft lead hollow slugs (Foster-type) make big holes, but that is about the extent of it. They have very low swectional density, so penetration leaves a lot to be desired, even when they don't expand. If you are close enough to your target that velocity s still pretty high, they can flatten out like a big lead washer, or worse, become mangled beyond recognition. In such a coonfiguration, they make large shallow wounds, and if they encounter much in the way of resistance, stop moving!
The sabot-type are something else again, and several have excellent penetration on heavy game. Don't use thosebig fat Fosters for anything tougher than deer. Use just the sabot-type bullets on the bigger stuff.
When discussing the ability of slug loads, one must specify WHAT KIND of slugs are being discussed. (A full-bore sized 12- ga. round ball will kill better than a Foster!)
