I don't favor astronomical observatory scopes on rifles not being made up to shoot small varmints at long range. On yours, I'd mount nothing larger tha a Leupold (always!!) 2X-7X, and personally prefer the 1.5X-5X for a large-game rifle! %x is plenty out to 300+ yards, and you're more likely to be shooting deer at ranges under 200 yards, most of the time!!

Keep yore powder dry!!

I'd go with the Leupold Vari X lll in 3.5x10x40 for what you are doing,I just bought a Burris Fullfield ll in 3x9x40 and was so disappointed in the optics when I got it that I sent it back and got another Leupold instead. It was less scope than a Bushnell 3200 Elite,Leupold Vari X ll,or a Redfield Five Star, all in the same 3x9x40.The leupold Vari X lll is also light in weight and has a super warranty thats lifetime transferable.A good lifetime scope for you to enjoy.

Stump,
Taking all the info you provided into account, IMO the "perfect" scope for you in your budget is the Leupold Vari XIII 2.5 by 8 36mm.
That scope is lightweight, highest quality, low mag for short shots, high enough mag to cover the effective range of the 30-06.
36mm is plenty for hunting, 50mm and illuminated plex are not necessary.
This is a versatile scope and will work well in 99% of hunting situations you may encounter.
The 3.5 x 10 50mm with illuminated plex would do a fine job for you, but you really don't need all that.

Stump, if your hunting in Canada in the north with pines, etc, then you'll want nothing under a 40mm objective. Believe me it can be an hour before sunset and look like it is dark in those areas, thats when the bigger objective is worth it's weight in gold.

I think you should do some inquiring with your outfitter before you buy, find out where, what and how you'll be hunting. Even ask him what he would suggest, most guys know and will give you that info baised on experience. In the end the 36, 40 or 50 maybe be the fit, but at least you'll know and have no second guessing when you step foot on the plane. You have plenty of time before you go to buy, mount and practice....be satisfied and sure of what you want/have.
