In California they have to pass a "drop-test" and the state was giving them so much hassle over it, STI just said screw you guys then. Last I checked the Kimber 1911 9mm's were also illegal. The thing is though, most cops would just see it as a regular pistol, so I'm not worried about getting caught with it, just getting it into the state.
Same issue here in "The Peoples Republic of Massachusetts" with the drop test. If you look around you may be able to find one that was registered in the state before the ban. That is a "work around" in Mass.

Drop test, what a joke. I guess the makers decided they did'nt want to crappen up their guns so they can be sold in CA. The only drop test shouldbe if you drop it, it still works. If you want a 9mm 1911, see if you could possibly find a used one in CA, then get a smith to make it sweet for you. No much you can't do with a 1911. If you just want a plinker, get a 45 and a Marvel kit to shoot 22lr. As for Taurus, when I see them take over the IPSC market, then I'll be convinced they're worth something. IPSC is the true test of a firearm. Sorry, argue all you want, those guns are run hard, then harder. Guys shooting 50,000 rounds a year like its nothing. The guns have to be built and re-built. 99% are some sort of 1911. Look at what the top guys shoot. Yeah, they are tricked to the hilt, but I've never seen a Charles Daly on the line....

They have to drop them from 5 feet to make sure they don't miss fire. The laws for 2010 are even worse, so far there isn't a pistol made that meets the 2010 standards.[:@][:@][:@]

even glocks???? I saw one of those get dropped out of a helicopter. That still sounds like bull$h1t to me. tell me how a gun with a firing pin block would fail the test?? any thing with a transfer bar should be fine. even my series 80 colt has a firing pin block, no friggin way that gun will miss fire, you HAVE to have your finger on the trigger.

Glocks pass the drop test, but the 2010 laws have a bunch of safety/grip type stuff with weird loaded chamber indicators and crap like that. I'll dig up the article I read it in.
