Default Rifle scopes....What do you guys think?

I'm looking at scopes and don't really know what to go with. I would like to stay around $300 or maybe under if at all possible. I am looking at something around the 3X9 category and probably either 40 or 50mm. Let me know what you guys like or if you have any suggestions for me. Thanks for the info.

Leupold Vari-X II 3X9X40. Should cost around $260 to $280.

id go with the vari-x II..if you really want to save some money go with a used one if you can find one...a guy i know owns a gun shop and any gun that he gets with a leupold he takes off and sells them seperatly..sells a used one for 165 usually..which is a steal being they have a lifetime warrenty...saved me a heck of alot of money i didnt have..took me almost all summer to save up my grass cutting money to buy the one i did for 150...i used mune for a season now and it worked great..clear as a bell too..

The 3x9 is a good choice for power, as for the front objective lens, the larger the objective lens the more light is gathered for low light conditions. You should also check on the eye relief especially if your shooting a magnum... Leupold is the way to go. Good luck..

I think their are a number of scopes that would fit the bill, Bushnell, Nikon, Leupold, etc. The 3x9 is a solid choice and I prefer 50mm objectives. However I wouldn't suggest buying a lower model 50 mm, over a higher model(quality) 40 mm scope. A budget is a budget and if you don't or can't up it to match the scopes base quality than stick with a higher quality 40MM.

Everybody has their favorites and eyes are different, so really buy what you like and as much as you can afford in whatever brand, power and objective. I have had excellent results with bushnell elites -3200-4200, loopy vari x III and the Burris Sign. Series. So I wouldn't hesitate in pointing you to look at either one of those scopes. (However the last 2 would cost you more than 300.00) Other guys have mentioned the varix II or some say the VX II from Loopy, however I wasn't really blown away by either of these scopes and personally opted for the Bushnell Elite 4200 and payed much less. Just my opinion though!

In this order:

1. Leupold Vari-X II

2. Pentax Lightseeker

3. Nikon Monarch

You may find you like one of these better than the others. Smile and go with it! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

3 X 9-40 or roughly equivalent is a good choice.....after that, I personally have never found any correlation in price and quality.....Tasco has always been good for me as well as the Bushnells.

Hey...it's your money.....spend it your way.

One pretty cheap scope that I have found to be tough as nails and an all around bargin that works is the Pine Ridge line from Cabelas. My hunting buddy has a couple of them that he has used for 4-5 years on several Magnum rifle. Not one problem. Good and clear. They run from about 50.00 to about 110.00. They have a good warranty including a 60 day complete money back warranty. Plus Cabelas has a no question asked return policy. I am going to get one and shoot the hell out of it during the off season. I have way to many rifles to put real expensive scopes on. I have also never had a problem with any of my Bushnell Trophy or Banner scopes. I had a Ten Power Banner sihouette scope for ten years. The silhouette rifle had countless thousands of rounds shot through it, more than a guy would shoot in 50 deer seasons. It performed perfectly and I sold it when I quit the game for just what I paid for it. It don,t get any better than that. At the time the scope cost about 70.00 bucks new.
