I don't know. What is the biggest game that can be taken with the '06?
Thats a lot like asking what's the biggest fish that can be taken with 10 lb. test?
Depends on the shooter/fisherman and the situation.

Doesn't matter....
What ever the largest animal that can be taken with a 30-06....
Someone will tell you they can do the same thing with a 30-30. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

You mean the one with the depleted uranium projectiles and the radar controlled targeting system used on naval vessels? That would be pretty formidable!
Would it be okay to replace 30-30 with 25-20? Would it kill game as well as a 30-30 in the hands of John Q. Public? (Similar place in history, what with the trailing -20 and the trailing -30 indicating grains of black powder.)

Hey now don't be picking on my 25-20, an 86 grain round nosed bullet at 1600fps, what could be more ballistically superior than that. Why I am planning on hunting T Rex with it just next week. Seriously though while I am a fan of the 25-20, Bullet design, quality and shot placement have a lot more to do with ethical harvesting than case size.

To be honest though, I think the "unedited version" reads closer to the reality for the majority of hunters! (Must have been your subconscious trying to get through!)

"Well ma'am its not what you got but whether you know how to use it that counts!", he said.
