Default long range hunting rifle

I am thinking about looking for a good long range hunting rifle

i wont something that will drive tacks at anywhere from 400 to 600 yards or more if possible

I would prefer something that has a well know well used round so ammo would be reasonably since cheap is no longer a option with the prices. but more so i wont accuracy.
something under 1000 but hopefully closer to 700 or so with out a scope

What gun model and caliber should i go with

Anyone of the Savage Model 12s in a .243 would do nicely. Depending on which one you got, you might have a lot more money left over for the optic department.

What are you going to be hunting? Groundhogs? Deer? If GH's are the game....I'd go 220 swift or 22-250. Deer...25-06, 308, etc. 600 yards is a looooonng shot for hunting situations. I'd have a hard time punching paper at that range.

Why dpose it matter how available ammo is? For shooting past 400-500 yards most factory ammo wont work well. You will find good lots of it sometimes but you will need to reload to get consistancy out 500-600 yards to hunt with the gun.

Your asking an awful lot for a rifle in the 700-1000 range. To shoot tacks out to 600 yards your going to have to spend a grand or more on a scope as well. Black Hills ammo would be your best bet, and a 308 or a 300 Win Mag would be the cartridges to look at.

I'd say a 30-06 and a good pair of boots to get you 200 yards closer......

If you want coyotes, hunt coyotes, if you want to hunt deer, hunt deer. No sense in taking pot shots atlong ranges because of a slow day hunting. A slow daygets even slower when you startshooting.....
