When you shoot offhand, trying to hold the crosshairs steady on your target will result in your aimpoint bouncing around. There's no way you can hold perfectly still. When you look thru your scope, take that bouncing movement and focus it into tight circles instead. With practice(no way around it), those circles get smaller. Aim small, miss small.

ORIGINAL: Bunny Buster

Im going to be rabbit hunting and I find it quite hard to keep the crosshairs on such a small target steady enough to shoot. Does it just take practice or is there any way to hold steady better? Thanks
Practice holding offhand. No shooting is needed, but you must develop the muscles needed to hold the rifle for a long time without developing shakes. As big tiny said, absolute steadiness is close to impossible, but you cangreatly reduce the arc that the muzzle swings through.

Put a quarter-sized rabbit picture on the wall and aim at it. And you need to learn how to use what you fnd in the woods as rests to help steady the rifle. Like a tree trunk, limb, etc.

Also, practice assuming the kneeling and sitting positions while hunting. In some situations, you will be able to shoot from one or the other of these positions, and both are much steadierthan offhand!

Practice is the main thing. Try to use whatever you have as a rest. Kneel or lay down to make yourself more steady, use a monopod or tree, and have fun.

Practice, also if he's running whistle at it.The rabbit will stop thinking it is a hawk and provide 1-2 sec shot opportunity

Maybe I'm weird, but I wait to pull the trigger until the crosshairs have wandered over where I want to shoot. I try to limit movement, but I know I can't eliminate it.
