H&R Handi Rifle vs Stevens Model 200

RE: H&R Handi Rifle vs Stevens Model 200
"I had .223 H&R and it would not hit a 8x11 sheet of paper at 100 yard everytime."
I am not a fan of Handi-Rifles either. My .223 has a huge chamber. The fired case is swollen on one side from lying in the bottom of the chamber. That gun is the last Handi I will ever own. It is soon goingthe way of the all the others I have owned-sold.

If a standard stevens is anything like the stock on my special run savage model 16, it will definately need a bedding job. Mine is just plain sloppy in the stock. It is going to get a full bedding job as soon as I get the materials and the time.

If single shot, then Ruger #1, falling block instead of break open.
In any case a single shot is a package with a built in limitation from the very start.
The refrain of many a guide and/or PH working with an American client.... "Stop admiring your shot and hit him again!".... too much deer hunting.

I hunt alot of management areas where the general rule is if you're the last one to shoot at the deer, it's yours. Heard stories of a case where a man shot a deer, it ran off, passed another man who shot at the deer. When the argument was presented to the local game wardens working the check station they said the last one who pulled the trigger on the deer got it. They completely ignored the fact that the first man shot the deer facing left to right and hit it in the right side, while the second shot at it while running right to left and there was no entry on the left side of the deer.
I guess the point of all that is to say that if I'm in one of the management areas I'm going to keep shooting 'till it's down or it's gone. That being said, a good lever action is always my choice in these situations. Sometimes I will take my 338 with the thought that the deer wont need a follow up shot.

I have a .243 handi rifle and two Savage 110's in .30-.06(both pre accutrigger). I can't complain about any of them. My daughter can consistently shoot 3/4" groups with the handirifle. I cannot.I shoot better withmySavage (as opposed to my son's). Savage's reputation for accuracy is solid for good reason. For simplicity the break action single shot can't be beat. It is the sort of beast that a person could fabricate most any part needed if one had to--and do so without a milling machine.
Who will be shooting the thing? For youth, the hand rifles are a nice size. Add to that the fact that you can get several barrels for the same stock and action: Including shotguns, rifles, and muzzle loader; it becomes a versatile little unit.
If you already have a good selection of bolt actions, than the single shot break action might be a nice change up. It really comes down to personal preference.

I have both Handi in 444 and Stevens in 243.. Both are great guns.. The H&R is shorter and therefore more HANDI... The stock on the Model 200 leaves something to be desired.. .But either way I think you will be happy for the money..

I have a Handi-Rifle in .243 also and have no complaints about it. It holds a .75 group at 100 yards and 1.5 " group at 200 yards. I never have used it for deer but a lot of yotes have seen it's power.
