Kit guns?
Has anyone built one of these? I was looking at a site for an ar-15 and it said it came complete less a stripped lower. You didn't even need an ffl to purchase it. What is the accuracy like with one of these guns? Any other info about these rifles would be appreciated, thanks.

RE: Kit guns?
what gun are you talking about hard to say when we do not have a link or know what your looking at
If it came with out a lower then ofcoarse you need no ffl
you only need the ffl for the lower
you can buy the part all separate but when you go to buy the lower housing you will need a ffl
Heck you can buy the parts to turn a semi auto into a full auto selector. switch but get caught with it and your do 20 years. i though about it until a gun dealer told me it was illegal
I do not like the idea of buying parts and building a gun unless you really know what your doing
If i went to buy a gun that had been built by anyone besides the manf. i would not buy it.
Just buy a complete gun from one of the well known company's dpms bushmaster colt rem. i do not like Olympic
do not go cheap a AR is not a cheap gun if you wont a low cost gun go with a ak47 or sks stay away from the Ar's.
I know no one that has a good setup AR that is not stock or a cheap piece of crap for less then 1000.
I am looking at buying another and i budgeted 1300 to 1500 for it at least of corse that is either a dpms or bushmaster with alot of extras most of which you can add later
but even a good stock ar will run you 800 to 1000
spend the money and be happy with it

RE: Kit guns?
the colt no ars yes i had two bushmaster i loved them only thing with ars is to clean them alot more so at the break in period i had mine jam alot at the beginning just keep oiling them if i go shoot alot say more then 100 rounds i oil the bolt over 250 i clean it
i am looking at getting another it will be bushmaster or dpms properly dpms because i do not think bushmaster has a 7.62
as for the kit if you buy one of those and the stripped lower from bushmaster which needs an ffl is 200 so your talking at least 700 you Can get a bushmaster for 800 or so so you are not saving much
i also like the idea of it being fun and a good way to learn the gun
but you could forget to do something that might cost you 700 bucks and might even cost someone there life
just to many things could go wrong to me
buy a complete factory gun and strip it down and rebuild it how you wont. with a factory gun you get good parts and a warranty

I never knew the price of other AR's until after I posted. I thought I might save a little money, but if bushmasters are that cheap, I will just buy one of them. My uncle has a DPMS though and loves it, plus they have a lotof calibers. I might like that .338 lol

My brother has a kit AR. We've never quite gotten to the point with it that it'll reliably feed from all standard M16/AR15 magazines.
Yes, you can buy all the parts for an AR EXCEPT the lower receiver without an FFL.
For the money, you're probably better off buying a stock AR from a reliable manufacturer.

RE: Kit guns?
no one is mentioning armalite. Is there a reason for that? As I've mentioned in another post, I think they're chambering the 338 Federal which is a .308 necked up. Really good round. http://www.armalite.com/ItemForm.aspx?item=10TBN338

RE: Kit guns?
You can buy a Superior or Stagstripped lower for around $100 +tranfer fees- don't buy a bushmaster stripped lower, they are way overpriced.

RE: Kit guns?
i also plan to buy bushmaster but if i can not get a 7.62 i might go with a 5.56 lower bushmaster and a 7.62 dpms upper since you can take a stock lower 5.56 and just slide the 7.62 upper on it

RE: Kit guns?
Whoa, hold on a minute there....
There's one serious technical problem with sliding a 7.62(x51 NATO) upper onto a 5.56mm lower. The magazine well. You see, the 5.56mm magazines are a good bit shorter than the 7.62mm magazines (try about 0.50", just an estimate comparing a handy M16 mag to a handy M14 mag here at my desk). Though Idon't have an upper for either handy, I'll bet you the 7.62mm upper is longer than what will fit on a 5.56mm lower thanks to a different bolt.
So, DON'T attempt to put a 7.62mm upper onto a 5.56mm lower unless you think you can jam cases 51mm (.308/7.62mm)long into magazines designed for cases 45mm long (.223/5.56mm)
