I really like the Remington 700 SPS as a hunting rifle. I don't own one......yet. I also don't own a 30-06. Having a 280 Rem. and 308 Win. I really don't need a 30-06. However if I was starting from scratch and buying allnew rifles, a 700 SPS 30-06 would be the first one I'd buy. I'm not knocking any other brand or models. I just prefer Remingtons, I've had great luck with them so far. [/align]

I think if you shop around you could find a new TC Encore for that price-or real close. The Encore would open up a whole world of options for you in the future. Additional barrels can be bought for a good price. Especially if you shop the net for a good used one. I have alot of rifle's, and my Encore 30-06 is my go to deer rifle. They handle great, relatively lightweight, short length, and more than accurate enough for deer. Tom.

Not sure of the cost, but you might want to look at a Ruger, especially if you are planning on mounting a scope. My .270 stainless came with stainless rings and Rugers have the mount milled into the gun. A good steel base and rings can push the cost up $50 or more.

Used Browning Bar. I'm not sure if you can find one under $500 or not. I found mine used in like new shape for $550 at a local gunshop. I love that thing and would recommend checking it out.

Remington 700 SPS is 459 at www.academy.com

can prolly find it cheaper elsewhere, but the 700 action is a solid action and very accurate
I will agree with you. Have had good luck with Remington 700's. I have a couple of them.

I've seen several nice looking new guns in the cases at Wally World, most were already matched with a scope and rings. The models that come to mind that I would like to own also were a boly action Remington 30-06 in the composite stock and a few Savage gunswith the acu-trigger in a .270 and a 22-250 Model.
