RE: Who cares that much about meat damage?
It sounds like maybe we need to define what is "lost meat".
Every deer I've butchered that was shot through the shoulder had at least several pounds of meat that was riddled with bone fragments or excessively bloodshot. On some, practically the whole upper shoulder where the majority of the meat is is blown. While most of it could probabaly be salvaged with careful washing, etc. that is a difficult job at best.
I find it hard to believe that people who commonly shoot deer through the shoulder do not see the amount of meat that I've seen damaged. If you butcher your own, you'll see it. If you do like the pilgrims, and visit Mr. Pro Meatcutter, you'll never know what was wasted. Believe me you will have fewer neatly wrapped packages as a result of the shoulder shot.
We don't live in a perfect world, and can't always pick our shots. That doesn't mean that philosophically it is ok to waste meat. That's why I take the heart lung shot whenever possible.
While, ultimately, any shot that puts a deer down rather that losing it is a good shot, it bothers me to hear what appears to be a somewhat callous attitude toward loss of meat, and toward meat in general.
I don't care what form of religion, naturism, or atheism you subscribe to , there is one universal truth to hunting: "Not using something you bring the death of has got to be a sin."
And remember, after you pull that trigger, all you really have is meat.

AMEN Bullkllr!
Granted sometimes you have to shoot a shoulder to get an animal, but your right, there is alot of wasted meat with a shoulder shot and when you get to larger animals like elk and moose there is alot more meat that gets wasted. If you are going to kill it then you should make every attempt to save as much meat as possible. That includes where you place your bullet. Don't just shoot it in the shoulder just cause you don't like the taste of the meat. If you don't like the way it tastes then give it to someone who does or don't kill it.

I usually try to take the best shot presented and as others have said that isn't always in the boiler room . I will say if I don't have a decent shot I have let them go because I don't want a lot of bloodshot meat . I guess I do care about where and what thier shot with ,Picky if you like .

Bullkllr, well I think it's been defined many times in all the posts. Maybe should reread the posts. We are talking shoulder meat here. Yep, your right, that most of the shoulder if all is gone with these shots. But if it bothers you that I am not a big shoulder fan, I am not sure what to say. Eating something you don't like just for the hey of it, or because Negent tells you "you owe it to the animal", I believe is bull. As one guys said, its my deer. And its kinda funny, these people that are so pickie, are the some people I see year after year, giving away meat anyway.
Bullhunter, we are talking about 120lb deer here mainly. As a person who took moose, I know there is alot of nice usable fatfree, hamburger meat on the shoulder. Not really talking about that, But hey, if some wants to take it in the shoulder, because they don't like it, more power too them. I mean should I chastise you because you may not eat the brains or organs. You might, I don't know and really don't care. I myself would rather not hit the heart. I myself keep the heart. Alot better that those few crappy shoulders. You see what I am trying to tell you. Everyone has likes and dislikes. And just because you might like the butthole of an animal, don't mean I do. Or even should.

I do care about a lot of meat damage, because I butcher my own deer. My brother shot a deer this fall with a 7STW with a 120gr bullet. I took the deer, seeing how I didn't have one. It was so full of shrapnal, that it made butching it a pain in the butt. Should have left it for the yotes. Zeak

Isn't everyone saying pretty much the same thing just in different ways? You take your best shot. You don't deliberately destroy/waste meat. Sometimes it happens. I've cut away destroyed meat and think at the time; it's too bad to be wasting this meat but what else are you going to do with it? Anyways the whiskey jacks or crows are usually quite happy to dine on it. gg.
