What cartridge for what range??
Well, this has probably been done before, but for the sake of some of our newcomers, let's do it again.
1). What gun/cartridge comb. is best for up to say 70 yds. in thick woods?
2). Same as above, but now what is best for 0-200 yds., various backrounds? ( Woods, open areas, etc.)
3). What do you recommend for 150-350 yds., mainly open ground?
We're talking deer-sized game here, whitetail, mulies, antelope.
Let's hear your suggestions...............

#1. Lever gun in what ever cartridge you choose. I am partial to the 444 Marlin.
#2. Ruger frontier or Steyr scoutin 7mm-08, .308, .376 Steyrwith a low power, variable, extended eye relief scope mounted foward over the barrel.
#3.Standard bolt gunis something like a 7mm-08, 25-06, .270 etc with a 3-9X40 mounted low over the receiver.

Any of the 308/30-06 class cartridges in a remchestersavage will work bestfor any of those situations.
I don't buy into the notion that a levergun is better at shorter ranges than a bolt gun chambered in a superior cartridge.

RE: What cartridge for what range??
I agree Briman, but a short barreled open sight lever gun can be pretty handyin a short range situation. The carbines swing real nice in a treestand or in tight quarters. Isn't the goal to convince the spouse you NEED another gun to hunt with because ......................
