"Having a problem with recoil" and/or "being scared of recoil" is entirely different than being conscious of recoil. Truly in my group of shooters/hunters I don't know of anyone who isn't concious of recoil. That's why you pull it in snug to the shoulder and don't crawl too far up the stock.
If you're only hunting light skinned game like white tails a 7mm.08 is probably your best choice. If you want a real good good moose (elk) gun get yourself a .300 or .338. If recoil is a problem and/or you need something that is OK for both jobs then stick with the 30.06. Applying that rational I wouldn't own a 270 nor would I buy a 270WSM. But you know you have to make you own choices. I just have to say that my model 70 Cassic Stainless 300 WSM with a Pachmayr Decelerator, 3 1/2 lb. trigger and Leupold 2.5 to 8 is a sweet shooter.
Treedog; Do you know anyone with a .300 WSM that you could shoot before making a final decision? gg.

RE: 300 wsm recoil......how bad is it?
Since I've been shooting my .338 Win. Mag. and 375 H&H quite a lot the past couple of years, I found the recoil to be on my 300 WSM a non-issue. Liked it so much, I ordered another one a few weeks ago.
