A 300 WSM is bit on the plus size side of things for whitetail deer. A .280 is a great choice.

I love my 300 WSM... but its a bigger game gun for me. Works as a loaner or a backup in a pinch... but I think you'll be happier in the end with a .280.

The 300 WSM might be a little big for whitetails if you use 180 gr bullets, but I have killed several east Texas deer with 150 gr BT's out of the couple of 300 WSM's that I have had.

A little info about what you intend to hunt would help.

the good ol 7mm diameter is just about the perfect size for whitetails in whatever cartridge you choose. The .280,7mm rem mag,7mm wsm,.284,7mm08,or my new wildcat cartridge based on .375 ruger full length necked down to 7mm.

I would definitely get the 280 Rem.

I'd rather have it than the 300WSM.

The only experience I have had with any of the wsm cartridges was my cousin's model 70 300wsm. He's an avid shooter and a fine shot. Couldn't get that gun to group less than 4" at 100 yds. He did everything he could think of from changing scope, mounts, both, went as far as taking gun to Winchester authorized 'smith and they wound up sending it back. Winchester said the gun was fine and did not shoot outside of their acceptable limits. Since then I have been kind of leery of them. I'm not saying they are all bad, but I don't think I want a deer rifle that 4" groups are "within the acceptable parameters"

Go with the .280 the 300 is on the large size for deer.
