RE: 25-06 performance ?
I've killed about a dozen deer with my 25-06. I'l echo what's already been said. Plenty of power, flat shooting, accurate, pleasant to shoot... etc. Get it you won't be disappointed.
i've gotten the best results using heavier bullets for hunting. 120 rem corelokts, 117 hornadys, 120 federal fusions.

RE: 25-06 performance ?
In 1990 the Remington 700 Classicwaschambered in25-06 Rem.The 700 Classicwas and still is my favoritebolt action rifle. I read a lot of goodthings about the 25-06 and since it was available in my favorite rifle I bought one. Well kind of, I wasn't old enough to buy it. I had to havemy mom or dad (I can'tremember which one)buy it for me. In 1997I tradedit for the 700 Classic that year, the 280 Rem. I wanted something a little heavier. At the time I couldn't afford the280 without selling the 25-06. I don't regret doing it. Ireally like the 280.I've shot one deer with it.My 25-06did shoot really well. It would group under an inch at 100 yards with 120 gr. Remington Core Lokt ammo. That's whatI used forhunting deer with it. I never shot a deer withit.I shot 100 gr. Remington Core Lokts and 90 gr.Winchester Power Points (I think that's what they were called). They all shot very well. I don't think I ever shot any ammo in it that wouldn't shootan inch or better. It was definitely a shooter (as is my 280). I'd recommend bothcartridges.

But if you get one make sure that you get the older models of the model 700. The new 700s are pieces of crap.

I have a Ruger M-77 chambered in 25-06, I love it.
Before you buy it you could check the ballistics/energy on Remingtons webpage. Remington has a page that will let you compare two rounds head-to-head. I just compared the 270-winchester to the 25-06.
good luck hunting

25-06 is outstanding. Can't say enough about this cartridge. Fast, flat, accurate and packsenough punch when it arrives. I did a lot of reading and asking around before I actually bought one and I haven't been disappointed one bit. I have yet to need a 2nd shot to bring anything down and the majority of animals I've shot with it have dropped where they stood.
