Default gun for the lady?

i need a rifle for my woman, she;s small and doesn;t like recoil, i;ve got the rimfire and shotgun covered and have a few options on rifles already on hand, but always the option of a new one, so i was thinkin somewhat lightweight and light kicking, i have a marlin 336 in 30-30 that may suit her fine, also have a savage 99 in 300savage but it might be too heavy, anybody shot the 260 rem? i;ve read some ballistics on it and it looks close to a 6.5by something something (ya;ll know the swedish round), i figure within range should be good for a variety of game from deers to caribou to targets, i do like the 7mm08, and was also thinking 250savage or 257roberts, anybody got suggestions, now the last thing i wanna do is hand her my ought 6 with some 180's and scare her away,

"smile, life could be worse.. i could be datin your daughter."

Look at the Remington model 7 and possibly the youth/ladies model. The .243 is one rather mild recoiling and serious killing rounds!!!

I have a 260 Frem. I like real well. The recoil is light and it comes in light weight rifles like the Ruger Lt Wt and the model 7 Remington. I would not recommend a 243 to anyone as I have seen to many wounded deer get away even after pretty good hits. The exception would be if you reload and use Nosler Partitions or Barnes X bullets. These make a decent rifle out of the 243. When I guided hunters we had to chase after 50 percent or more of the Mule deer hit with the 243. Lately the ammo makers are producing some pretty good 243 loads but the early loads were a nightmare.

Been in the same boat, only guns that fit my wife off the shelf are the youth models and at the time I bought her her rifle .243 was the only good choice. I haven't seen any youth rifles in larger calibers so I'm assuming it hasn't changed and recommend the .243 to you too. Now if the manufacturers get smart they'd chamber a youth rifle in 7mm-08.

My choices for deer-sized game, in order would be:

.257 Roberts
6.5x55 Swedish
.260 Rem

The first two are older rounds, therefore a wide variety of ammo exists that is rather underloaded in defference to the many older rifles that may be chambered for them. These are very light in the recoil department and will make it easy for her to get some practice in. There are also hotter "+P" and/or "Light Magnum" or "High Energy" loads available that make them more than adequate to 300+ yards. If you handload, they are both excellent numbers for that purpose.

The .260 Rem is also a great new cartridge, but all factory ammo will be loaded to the maximum standard pressure. If she can handle it, it is perfect for your needs.

If you intend to hunt something a little larger, then I would drop the .257 Roberts from the list and add the 7x57 Mauser and the 7mm-08 Rem. The Mauser gets the nod for the same reasons as the .257 and 6.5x55. But if she can handle the recoil, the 7mm-08 is a great cartridge. In fact, I am in the process of trying to find a 7x57 for my 12-year-old son. He will hunt deer, pronghorn and elk with it.

My wife shoots a Remington 742 in 243 cal.and I shoot a Remington mohawk carbine in 243 cal.
I can not recommend the 243 high enough.they are a real good cal.I have only shoot one deer in the 30 years or so I have been shooting the 243,that I didn't get. all the others were only a short 50 yards or less away.
same with the wife only shoot one we didn't get.she hit him low in the front leg(not fatial,we say him about three mos later)this does not count all the #'s of hogs we both have taken.
only two out of all we have taken,I would say over 100 deer.

this year she took her largest buck yet,a 10 pt. field dressed 134 lbs.she took him at 150 yards, one shot, went less than 50 yards.

so you can see I am for the 243 over 150%.little or no recoil, good for 150 to 200 yard shots.several size bullets from light varmit to deer.I believe she will be happy with the 243.just make sure you also get her a real goooood scope.
just my 2 cents;there are 98 more!!!!<img src=icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle>

I am not a hunter I am a whitetail population reduction specialest

remember keep your back to the sun, your knife sharp, and your powder dry.

I cannot knock the 243 because I have taken a lot of deer with one up 300 yds,it is very good for deer.I have a 260 and it is one hell of a deer rifle,It probably is my favorite,a ruger mk11 stainless, have taken deer with every weight bullet offered. It would be a good round for women ,youth and men.A 7/08 is a very good round for all also about the same recoil. There is so many very good rounds maybe you should let her decide.

Remington makes it's Model 7 Youth in 7mm-08. I have had the SS version of this gun for 5 years and it still works great. You can't go wrong with a Remington. Hope this helps!

My brother just bought the Rem 7 in 7mm-08....loves it! It will be the starter gun for his son when he starts hunting(in 8 years!). Highly recommended.
