RE: mossburg shotguns any good?
mossberg is a good gun comany we got my dad a 500 for christmas and it is fine, another good gun is the remington 870 but personally i like the feel of the 500 much better then the 870 another good gun to look at is the winchester 1300 they are not made anymore, but you can still find them i found over a dozen of them brand new at a gun store and few used, so if price is your thing i would go with any of them.

I had an 835 and I was never very happy with it. Couldn't get it to pattern well with the factory turkey choke. Didn't like the noisy pump. The pins would pop out after so many shots. Overall heavy. Just not happy with it at all. Sold it and got a Stoeger 2000. Much happier now.

We were very pleased with the Tactical Turkey’s design, features and performance. It is an excellent, well-thought-out rig ready for the turkey woods right out of the box. It also makes for an impressive tactical gun when fitted with a tactical sling and a red-dot sight. It, indeed, lives up to the billing of both words in its name.

In addressing the "noisy slide". Everyone has been mistaken regarding this issue.
It is not the working of the slide that is considered noisy - it is the fitting of the slide. Let's say you have the gun over your lap and a deer suddenly materializes nearby (funny how tey can do this - isn't it?). You pick the gun up to shoulder it and when your hand hits the slide for support - you'll hear it. Will the deer hear it too and spook him?

I have a couple of Mossberg 500s and have never had a problem with either that was due to anything besides my abuse. They never failed me in any weather, be for spring turkey, November deer, or January bunnies.
The first firearm I bought 30 years ago was a Mossberg 500, 30" barrel with a full choke. Though it has been supplanted by a couple of Browning O/Us and assorted rifles, it still sits in my closet ready to go, albeit with a new stock to replace the one I broke, a smoothbore slug barrel, and a Gander Mtn scope..
Except for the fact that as I got older my budget allowed me to get nicer stuff, I have a soft spot for that gun. Maybe I'll take it for shotgun deer.
