I bought myrifle last fall and shot my first deer with it Nov. 1st '06 at about 60-70 yards. I've been shooting all summer long to get used to it and to get more practice. I've mainly been shooting 150 gr. Winchester Super X Power Points with alright accuracy and tried some Federal Fusions in the same grain and same result. Does anyone else have a similar gun and reccomend a specific load that I'll get better accuracy? I'll be hunting and my furthest shot will be around 150 yards (maybe 200), but could also shoot something around 25-50 yards as well. I hear the Federal vital shokw/ Nosler ballistic tips are good. Just curious to see if anyone has something they think I should try for a little better accuracy. Thanks in advance.

You may want to try 165 or 180 gr bullets. Bullet weight and can sometimes make a big difference.

If you are happy with the accuracy you are getting, then do not waste your money on the more expensive ammo. Super X has killed alot of deer. If you were on a once in a life time hunt out west for bigger game, then you might be able to justify the expense, but for mid range hunting(what you described) the more expensive ammo will not yield any better outcome. Every gun shoot different. What load shoots good in your gun might not shoot good in another. My suggestion is to pick up a box each with different brands and bullet weights. Also same bullet weight but different brand will shoot differently too. Point of aim. I had that with a 243win. sighted in with 100gr. Remington Core-Lokts and then shot Federal with 100gr. Sierras. The fFederals shot 12" higher.

Try the Federal Blus Box 150 grain loads. They are loaded with Speer Grand Slam bullets and have shot well in all of my 30-06's which have mostly been Remingtons.

I believe they are the Speer Hot-core bullets,not the Grand Slams. I checked Federal's websight.

I agree with trying a different bullet weight. The ranges you indicate don't require a flatter trajectory so no real loss in terms of ballistics. I don't own a 06 anymore but when i did my gun preferred 180 gr.

I have two boxes here that say Grand Slams. They are a couple years old so I can't say they have not changed. I also don't know if they load more than one 150 grain bullet. Maybe the bid on bullets and use whatever they get the best deal on. I have only used the ones in the BLUE box. Check your local stores. These loads chronographed almost exactly as stated on thei ballistic chart on the box. This is not always the case. They clocked 2906 and the box claimed 2910.

My Remington 700 XCR seems to like the $11.00 per box Federal Powershok ammo in 150 gr. .30-06. My rifle shots clover leaves at 100 yards.

FWIW, I have two Remington 700s in 3006, One an ADL, one a BDL. they are from the same era, about early to mid '70s. So the only difference really, is the stock. The BDL will shoot literally anything I put in it, into about two inches at 100yd, though, it shoots 180gr bullets really well (3/4" groups) the ADL will shoot 180s into about 2.5 to 3 inches and 150s into an inch or less. I hand load everything. I own eight 3006s and all are different. If you shoot factory ammo, I would heed the suggestion above about the cheapy Federals. I have never had a rifle that did not shoot Federals well, I almost stopped hand loading for my .243 because it shot the power shock ammo so well. I have had a bunch of rifles over the years ( I presenty own about forty)
