Default 35 whelen

I've heard of people handloading 35 whelens. Federal makes a 35 whelen bullet, but I've never seen a gun that said 35 whelen on the barrel. In short, I've heard about the bullet, but not a gun to shoot it. The ballistics look good on it. Do you shoot it out of a 35 rem rifle? Stupid question I know but I have no expereince with either.

As you yourself have pretty much surmized, you don't shoot a 35 Whelen in a 35 Remington. The two cartridges are completely different.

The 35 Whelen is based off the 30-06 case, necked up to 35 caliber and as such it throws heavier bullets better than the 06. It was a wildcat for many years until Remington started chambering for it. They chambered it in the 700, 7600 and I think the 7400, but I'm not sure about that one. It didn't do as well as they'd hoped and I'm not sure what they are chambering it in now.

kodiakhuntmaster, the .35 Whelen is the .30-06 necked up to .358 diameter bullets, and one very powerful "SOB" it is!!!!

Many of them was custom built on '98 mausers up until Remington legitimized the cartridge in (I'm guessing) 1988 and bought out the Remington 700 for the commercialized cartridge. Ruger may also have produced rifles in that caliber.

Don't think it can be shot from .35 Remington barrels.....this is one serious big time cartridge and on a par with the .375 H&H cartridge.

As far as I know, the only way to get one today is thru Remington. It's one serious powerful cartridge!!!

ruger did do a run last year or the year before. it had the 20" barrel the " ugly looking stock " and was in stainless steel. i have one in a F.N. sporter . it took me 5 years to find a gun in that caliber.
it might be easier or even cheaper to get a 30-06sprg rifle by any manufacturer except browning ( need a special tool browning has to take the barrel off )and just have a good gunsmith change it from a 30-06sprg to a 35whelen.
since i got mine now i will never part with it!

The cheapest way to get a 35 Whelen is to get a Savage 110 in 30-06 or 270 and then get and Adams & Bennett 35 Whelen barrel from Midway, along with a set of headspace gauges and a barrel nut wrench. Takes about 45 minutes to swap out.

Funny how it goes. I know fellow who regularly has a table at gun shows in this area. He had a Ruger model 77 (I can't recall now if it was the original 77 or a Mk. 11) in .35 Whelen. He had purchased it new when Ist. released by Ruger and although fired, it still looked brand new. It was walnut, blue with sights, still in the box, manual & all. I'm sure he brought it to the shows off and on for 6 months before finally selling it. This was a year or so ago. When I noticed it was gone I asked him about finally selling it. Dave is his name - he said he had finally sold it but since selling he it could have sold it about 5 more times....It's the only one I've ever seen. I believe you can still buy Remington Pointed Soft Point 200 gr. & 250 gr factory ammo in 35 Whelen. gg.

There's quite a power difference between the two. The 35 Rem is a short range deer & black bear round while the 35 Whelen is a longer ranged round suitable for all North American game animals.

With Remington Factory loads the difference is 1921 ft-lbs at the muzzle for the 35 Rem vs 3177 with the 35 Whelen. Thats comparing both with 200 gr bullets. Remingon also loads a 150 gr bullet in the 35 Rem and a 250 grainer for the 35 Whelen, which further accentuates the difference.

Huntforlife, I don't mind at all, I think the 35 rem is like a 30-30 case with a heavier bullet, and the 35 whelen is a 30-06 case with a heavier bullet on it.

To all those who have shot them, how was the recoil?

My wife bought me a Rem. 7600 pump in .35 whelen for Christmas several years back. The next fall I shot a small 4X4 mule deer buck with it and a 5X5 170+ net B&C whitetail buck. It kicks a bit at the range but as usual I don't notice any kick while shooting at game with it.

Robin.
