thanks GP you answered my question to the tee i just picked up a 35 rem this year as a short range deer rifle for the thick stuff i heard it tears through brush pretty good that is about all i know about the .35 cal

maybe thirty years ago I fired a friends .35 whelen.....it was a custom '98 mauser built by Cap Ahlman in Morristown Minnesota. The bullet was a 250 grain Hornady and the barrel was a converted .300 savage barrel.....the thing had a shortened barrel...it was maybe 20" and in total the entire gun was maybe under 6 pounds. Oh yes.....a birdseye maple stock to boot!!!!

I have only one thing to say about this thing's recoil......OUCH!!!!!

the Whelen kicks more than a 30-06, and less than a 338 Win mag... it also kicks less than my .54 cal muzzleloader loaded with heavy maxi-balls and 100gr powder..... course, that's a light little rifle.

my 35whelen has to weight atleast 8lbs.shooting that gun with 250gr. core-lokt's has just as much ummphhf! as my browning medallion chambered in 30-06sprg shooting 180gr. bullets. i thin it has more to do with the style of the stock,weight if it fits good or not.
