I do treat my guns well and use the Weaver see thru rings if I use them at all. I am also careful about mounting my scopes as I think 90 percent of scope problems come from improper mounting. I have very good luck with many of the cheaper scopes as well because I take time and care when mounting them.

About ten years ago I bought six Tasco Pronhorn scopes and mounted them on high power rifles for myself, my brother and nephew and my wife. To date these scopes are holding zero and have never failed to perform well. They are on rifles from 250 Savage to 300 Win Mag. These are 4X scopes that cost less than 20 bucks each.

I do believe you are correct about bad mounting causing problems! I always laugh when I read about some "expert" getting hit in the eyebrow by his scope, especially gun rag authorswho supposedly know better! Eye relief has to be sufficient for the recoil level of the rifle being used, and the scope has to be placed correctly to get the benefit of that eye relief. If your .416 scope slices your brow open, it's your own fault!

I once heard from a scope distributor in Australia who sold a number of different brands. He said that basically, he had no more returns of bad scopes from the less expensive brands such as Tasco than from those more expensive ones, including Leupold. So far, I have never had any scope on a rifle or a .454 Casull just give up and quit on me, as I seem to hear about a lot! I have used Tasco (on my .454!!), Leupold, Kahles, Pecar-Berlin, Weaver, Redfield, Bushnell, Bausch & Lomb, and Lyman scopes over the years.

To date, every failure I've experienced when hunting over the past 50 years was due to a scope MOUNT having a problem. The worst of these have been loose windage screws on those Redfiled JR mounts and their clones, such as the Leupold. Nowadays, I epoxy one windage screw in place, and used loctite on the other one so the rings can be removed if necessary.

this is my take on the whole see thru ring thing.some people are just more adaptable with set ups and arent as picky. they just make things work. there are those who just like the idea of being prepared. they probably have 2 spare tires in there vehicle. they dont wanna deal with the chances of a scope going bad or a gun being dropped.so be it. then there are the true working reasons for having see throughs. i stumbled upon this myself. in certain hunting conditions like tracking deer deer in maine in the snow. the potential for a deer to get up quickly makes having open sites nice to have. a deer kicked up on an open ridge 140 yards away makews the scope nice to have.my remington 7600 has a built in cheek piece that is ramped . if i want to use a scope i just slide foward and it puts me in the scope. a little back brings the eye down and now my iron sites work. its what you like. i have them on my 7600 and my model 94. they work great.
