While the ammunition is expensive, you have to remember that to get a Remington with equivalent ballistics you would have to get the .300 RUM and you will pay as much for ammunitionin that chamberingas youwill for .300 WBY Mag ammunition.
Actually the only way to get the velocities advertised by weatherby for the 300weatherby,you must use the weatherby brand factory loads which are noticeably hotter than the 300weatherby loads from the other manufacturers. The weatherby brand factory loads are significantly more expensive than the loads for the 300 ultramag using the same bullets.

I have a Weatherby Vanguard in .300 Wby Magnum and am very happy with it.
The vanguard has a 24" barrel compared to the 26" barrel for the mark V.The velocities quoted by weatherby for the 300weatherby,are for a 26" barrel. Therefore, even with the weatherby brand factory loads, you won't likely achieve the weatherby quoted velocities without exceeding the design chamber pressure.

The simple fact is that most people choose the vanguard over the same rifle sold by howa in the non weatherby chamberings is because they think the weatherby name stamped on the receiver somehow makes it a better rifle.Or perhaps because they take the weatherby name to be some type of status symbol.

Actually, I would have been perfectly happy with a rifle that said Howa on itbut I wanteda rifle in.300 Wby Mag. and did not want to pay $1,500 for it.The only Howas chambered for that round are the Vanguards.

Actually that is quite a common situation. However if you had purchased a 300win mag with a 24" barrel, the hornady heavy magnum load with the 180gr bullet produces 3100fps.The hornady 300wby load produces 3120fps with a 24" barrel, for a gain of 20fps.The federal 300wby loads produce from 3040 to 3190fps with a 24" barrel for a maximum gain of 90fps over the 300winmag load. The weatherby brand 300wby loads produce 3240fps with partitions with 26" barrels or less than 3200fps with a 24" barrel. So in reality you are gaining less than 100fps over the 300winmag with your vanguard over a 300win mag with a 24" barrel. If you were to buy a 300win mag with a 26" barrel(such as a browning a-bolt)the 300win mah load would gain 70fps to 80fps wich would basically duplicate the ballistics of your vanguard in 300wby.
Another alternative would have been to buy a remington in 300ultramag.The federal data for 24" barrels lists a maximum of 3070fps with the factory 180gr 300ultramag load in a 24" barrel.Since the 300 ultramags come with a 26" barrel ,that velocity will climb 70fps to 80fps which will put it higher than your vanguard in 300wby for a price much less than a mark V rifle.

I currently own two Mk V's and two Vanguards. I have used and reloaded for numerous Weatherby calibers from .257 up to the .378 and never been disappointed in accuracy or velocity. I have easily exceeded 3250fps with 180gr bullets in my .300, and 3350fps from a 24" barreled Vanguard in .270 with 130gr. Three shot groups are under 1" at that speed and no pressure signs.
Everyone has their likes and dislikes, and I sure have mine
