I'm kind of wondering if he is having trouble separating the right eye vision from using both eyes to see with. Takes a lot of practice to get used to this, and as a young lad, it may be difficult to grasp the concept for awhile. The eyepatch could help, but just closing the left eye and getting used to looking through the scope right-eyed will get him used to the scope itself. After that becomes natural for him, start him opening the left eye while concentrating on the target through the scope with his right eye. The right eyed dominance should start to take over after he realizes how to use it. This is how I was taught years ago, when I had the same problem as a beginning shooter using a scope for the first time.
