6.5-284
I was wondering what bolt face a guy needs to make one of these cartridges. I am assuming a 284, but I know a 30-06 is real close as well. The reason I am asking is because I have a brand new in box 30-06 Remington 700 Dale Earnhardt Jr. rifle that I could make a custom out of.
Anyone have any suggestions on cartridges to make a custom out of.

Now I just need to figure out if I can get the other half of the gun for cheap. Me and a buddy put in together to win it, and sure enuf we won, its in my name and at my place and neither of us want a 30-06. Need to find out how much he wants for his half of the rifle so I can do what I want with it.

RE: 6.5-284
Any .473" boltface would work , though I dont think I would chamber the 6-284 or 6.5-284 in a long action unless I was planning on seating heavy for caliber bullets way out there which might be the case with the various VLD bullets. The longer action would be needed for it's longer magazine length.
If you were wanting a fast .264 caliber in the 30-06 length action I would go with a 6.5-06 or improved version or 6.5 Gibbs. The 2 later will give you faster velocities than the 6.5 on the 284 win case.
sorry to ramble,just some thoughts......

RE: 6.5-284
Having built a bunch of rifles in 6MM-284 and 6.5-284 on Remington actions, the long action feeds better. Not that the short action doesn't work . . . but it sometimes hangs up a little feeding with the 6MM-284. With the 6.5-284, I wouldn't even consider building one on a short aciton. Those long 6.5 bullets have to be seated real deep in the case to make the 2.8" magazine length. Even the regular 120 grain spitzers are too long when seated to where the base of the bullet is at the juncture of the neck and shoulder.
The wildcats based on the 30/06 case are good - at least as good from a velocity standpoint. But none seem to offer the inherent long range accuracy of the wildcats based on the .284 Winchester case. I do, however, like the hunting rifle performance of the .25-06 Ackley Improved and the .270 Ackley Improved. Never have owned one, but I would bet the 6.5-06 Ackley Improved is a great medium game rifle as well.
