A good affordable .223 bolt action rifle? Follow up to the .223 WSSM post
O.K. I let that A-bolt .223 WSSM go . I listened to what you all had to say. I asked the right questions. The answers I got made me decide to look at other options. I am now covinced that I want a .223 . I like bolt action, and preferwood to synthetic. I looked at and liked the CZ 5something rifle but it was a bit high in price. right at$500.00. Any ideas would help. I know I don't want the Remington 710. We could take that one and the Remington/ Mossberg one and have a dead horse race. I looked at a Stevens and a Savage. Is there something I missed or wasn't shown that is a great deal? It looks Like I can't get this gun and set it up for less than $700.00. Can I get it done for around $500.00?

You are going to be very hard pressed to find a good .223 bolt gun and get it set up for $500.
If you like the CZ, get the CZ. They make very good rifles and are very accurate.

If you're not too picky about the stock, take a look at the Howa M1500 Varmint (not varminter- they're more expensive) or the Weather Vanguard Varmint Special (Howa action). Both are better choices than Stevens or Savage IMO.
Or better yet- buy used. That way you can get a nicer rifle for the same price.

I found this at the place I've bought from: http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/78357
It seems like if you want their nicer stocks, you'll be well above $500.

I appreciate the offer Head0001, but I think if I'm gonna get this gun I will need to do a layaway plan. Since I would be doing it "under the radar".

I recently purchase a CZ527 American Laminatedin .223. It shoots sub MOA with handloads and cost me $319.00 at a shop in Sloatsburg, NY. I put a Simmons 8x32x50 on there for now and love the set up. The scope was $119.00. We're talkin' $438 plus tax for the whole shootin' match.
Try a Stevens 200. Bolt gun, synthetic stock, good accuracy( needs a trigger job though!) and light weight. An all day carry gun if you move alot. Gander Mountain has them with a scoped package for about $329.00.
Good Luck!

Just an update. Another gun shop had a Savage with a wood stock and a scope mounted and boree sighted for $ 430.00. I went and checked it out. While there I also checked out the Ruger M77. I thought the bolt was sloppy on the Ruger. I carefully weighed my options. I considered all my choices. I went over every part of the Savage. I then went back to Gander Mountain and put the CZ on Layaway. I should get it out in time for retirement. Note: I'm 35 years old.

You might take a look at the Stevens 200. They run without scope about $270 and you can get a decent scope for around $150 or so. I have a .270 Stevens and with a scope I have less then $500 invested.
