You have certainly given me alot of food for thought here. I do reload, so the Swift is not a problem. I like to shoot cartridges that most other guys around me are not shooting, just to be a bit different.
It seems that barrell life/throat erosion remains equal within the two cartridges if loads are consistantly beefed up to hi end specs. Do I understand you correctly that if I download the .220 Swift a bit, I'm now basically shooting at 22-250 specs?
The reason I'm trying to review all of your experiences is that at the Gander Mountain store near me, there is a Remington 700 VFSS in .220 Swift for an excellent price, well below normal retail. The savings on this rifle would allow for a top quality scope to be purchased without breaking the bank.
I like to do my homewrok before I buy something, and plan on learning from all of your posts to make the best decision here. There is another store close by that is having a close out on two Remington 700 VSS in 22-250 for $599.00 each. So, I'm in a bit of a dilemma here. Eeny meeny miney moe? The swift intrigues me, the 22-250 is the good 'ol standby!

Yes - the .220 Swift and the .22-250, when both are loaded to 3700 fps (55 gr. bullet), are the same mousetrap.You didn't mentionhow much cheaper the .220 Swift rifle is than the .22-250. Reloading costs are about the same.So if the Swift was even $50 less money, I think I would buy it.

The other option would be to get the .22-250, have a gunsmith set it back a threadand rechamber to the .22-250 40' Ackley Improved. This should cost you $75. Redding dies (recommended) are going to run about $30 more than standard calibers. But once you endure those initial expenses, I think it will pay for itself over the life of the gun in brass life and the lack of case trimming. And you will have something that is outside the mainstream if that intrigues you.

If you really want something nobody else has, get a 22-243 Middlestead. Just check out the rifles, I don't think you could go wrong with either as long as it fits you good.

Okay roskoe I got ya now, That is very true. I really have no problem getting 4150fpsfrom my swift.Very little trimming if at all (specs on load in last post).

22-250 AI sounds very interesting!!!! I have a .280AI already. Problem is that I need to find a gunsmith somewhere in my vicinity who's capable of this work( lots of guys claim to be a gunsmith!). The go to guy is very ill and has stopped the customized work. He was aces!!!

Anybody know of a super gunsmith I can ship to thats not half way across the USA? I live in NJ.

www.aquilafirearms.com He did most of the work on my 7mm Mag. He does pretty good work.


Or www.weaverrifles.com I haven't used them, but he says he does a lot of Wildcat chamberings. Might be worth looking into.
