Cannot go wrong with an 30.06. Good selection of ammo and doesnt pound you too bad with recoil.

I like my 7mm WSM for elk, but love my .30-06 for both.

The Browning A-Bolt in the .270 WSM is a real sweetheart.
I would second that! The 270 wsm is a hammer of thor on deer and I'm certain would flat smack down an elk.

My first choice would be a 300WSM and then i would second the 270WSM. These two are hot sellers and are super accurate cartridges.

I prefer anything from a .243-7mm Rem mag. I dont really like getting into those huge calibers for most north american big game. It's kinda like catching a crappie on 20 pd test if you know what I mean.30-06 is a verstile caliber but its a little heavy for my taste.....and becareful with the brownings.... i've seen a few barrel problems come from them since they started doing there bore manufacturing from japan.
